The mayors honestly have little to nothing to do with the housing policies in NYC outside of zoning. Rent control is actually set and controlled by the state assembly and governor.

Yeah I guarantee nothing happens to NYC Jews or the "finance community" as a result of this. Good that New Yorkers can see right through all of the corny scare tactics from billionaires and identity politics from right wing race baiters. Nobody outside of your drunk uncle or basement dudes who call women “females” believes that shit or really even cares.

When people are struggling, and they absolutely are struggling right now, they look for alternatives. Same way Trump won after Obama. Same way Biden won after Trump. Same way Trump won after Biden. It'll flip in 2028 too, because while tech CEOs argue for trillion dollar pay packages and Trump builds a garish ballroom, the average person can barely afford food, SNAP beneficiaries (who are overwhelmingly white, regardless of what propaganda tells you) can't afford food at all, farmers can't sell their soybeans, the economy is completely stagnant except for the AI bubble, and peoples' health insurance policies are about to skyrocket—all so that billionaires can get tax breaks, Israel can get its genocide funded, and Argentina can get a $40 billion dollar bribe.

I've been ringing the alarm bell and pointing at the rapidly growing wealth gap for years here on WSO and every single year it gets worse. When that happens and no one pays attention to it, traditionally, society turns to extreme measures, whether on the left or right, to solve it. As a result, we have this moronic despot in the White House who doesn't understand what a tariff is and the capital of capital elected a democratic socialist mayor. As the wealth gap continues to widen, and people continue to struggle, the election outcomes are only going to get more and more extreme.

Good correction that it isn't overwhelmingly white, but should also be noted that white is still the largest group beneficiary. The next largest group is Black/African American (non-Hispanic) ~26%.

Don't @ me

You and I likely have different political views but this is a correct statement regardless of where you sit. Common sense is common sense and most people don't have it any more. Both the left and the right are getting more extreme.

The only correction I'll make is your SNAP statistic, and I don't know why people refuse to use per capita as the standard measure for statistical analysis. Per capita tells a much clearer story than whole numbers and it really bothers me when people use misleading statistics...

What is the issue with referring to women as females?

It’s bullhorn that someone is a manosphere chode.

Strong correlation with a small penis too.

How is this top comment? You you guys dont call women females anymore and everything is trumps fault?

Your city was flooded with illegals who voted and gen Z “females” have no concept of reality voting over 90% for a communist.

PS you don’t have to live in New York City if it’s too expensive

If famously right-wing WSO is “too woke” for you, you should really get out of your bubble.

This is the most midwit comment imaginable and will age like ricotta cheese.

The man hates America, what it stands for and its people. Fundamentally, he believes that every person on this thread is evil and should be punished in the name of justice. He will turn NYC into a mental asylum. He will unleash the mentally ill and criminals onto the population. He will defund the police and not allow you to defend yourself. He will decriminalize "petty theft," which will decimate businesses, small and large.

Right-wing race baiters?Bloomberg, Tisch, Ackman. No I pretty certain many Jews did not want a Muslim anti-Israeli, mayor of their city.

Ackman in particular is a right wing race baiter and Jews are not universally zionists. Data is not the plural of anecdote, but for what it's worth, every single Jewish person I personally know is actively disgusted by Israel.

And many did.  I'm Jewish, and I voted for Mamdani.  You know why?  Because not every Jew thinks that the religious fanatics currently running Israel are a good representation of Judaism.

Some Jews are reflexively going to be one issue voters on Israel, which tells you everything you need to know about how serious they are - the mayor of New York has absolutely nothing to do with American policy towards Israel.

And the fact that you mention Mr Mamdani's faith, and not just his stance on Israel, kind of inadvertantly gives away what you're really concerned about.  Like most right wing people, you don't give a shit about Israel, you just don't like Muslims.  I'm proud we have a Muslim mayor.  This is the greatest city on earth, and I think it's wonderful that the city can take in someone from basically any background and turn them into New Yorkers.

There is an inherent disconnect in your point of view. Society is turning to extreme measures but don't worry because those measures won't have any effect on your life.

There is no inherent disconnect.

First off, there is a key aspect of society that insulates you from extremities: wealth. Rich people win no matter what.

Second, just because things will continue to get worse without a course correct doesn't mean they're going to happen tomorrow or in the next four years. People are being incredibly moronic about Mamdani in particular as opposed to following greater trends and taking a non-immediate outlook. Look at how many people have crashed out on this thread alone. The sky is not falling.

Remember when you claimed to be a Romney Republican and now you're defending a Marxist being elected to NYC mayor?

I worked on the Romney campaign. I didn’t leave the Republican Party, the Republican Party left me.

That was also 13-14 years ago. Hell, Trump was a Democrat back then.

Edit: LMAO Trump also seems to love the guy now.

Yeah, it’s a huge shift and a lot of people are feeling uneasy right now. Totally fair reaction when someone with polarizing views gets elected, whole communities get anxious, especially ones that already feel vulnerable.

But try not to jump straight to “it's all doomed.” NYC politics is messy and there are a lot of checks, voices, and activist groups that push back hard when things start crossing lines. People won’t just sit quietly if policies start targeting or marginalizing anyone.

It’s gonna be tense, sure but it’s not the end of the story.

It’s crazy how much people are crashing out about this. Businesses aren’t going to leave New York, people aren’t going to flee - hedge fund / pe founders with smaller staffs that wanted tax breaks already left for Greenwich like 20 years ago. A 2% tax raise on income earned over a million dollars (which he honestly might not even be able to enact) isn’t causing people to flee to Florida if they didn’t already leave during Covid. Wealth inequality is likely going to be the defining political issue of the next decade and you will see these types of candidates start to gain serious traction on the national level. People are seeing unprecedented levels of wealth in the billionaire class, while wages have remained fairly stagnant across all industries (even banking). The policy of just printing money in order to prop up big tech until AGI comes around is obviously unsustainable. Average Americans simply don’t care about GDP growth if they’re not reaping the benefits of it.

Also, while i don’t agree with all his ideas - he at least seems like a smart enough guy to realize how important it is for his policies to find success if he wants this movement to gain traction. Running NYC into the ground would just kill that movement before it even begins.

Most of the complaints I hear about him from people are about the Israel stuff and, honestly, Americans on both sides of the spectrum are pretty anti-Israel nowadays so it’s really not that controversial of a take to have.

At the end of the day, NYC will continue to be NYC - it’s the greatest city in America and people have always been willing to pay more in order to live here. Highly doubt that changes.

I mean kinda just seemed like basic leftist / populist messaging. Not that I agree with it but, genuinely, what do you think it actually enacts? He’s a mayor - not a president. It’s just gonna cause some arguements between him and Trump, which probably will only make him more popular.

I dont know bud, this is pretty extreme. I have colleagues trying to head to Wall Street South. NYC is sending a clear signal it rather have protesters, illegals and criminals doing as they please as opposed to law abiding, productive tax paying citizens that aren’t afflicted with main character syndrome.

This is going to only spread across the city, weak on crime (already and going to get worse) policies, welfare mentality, AND NYPD going to lose plenty of good officers and gain even more loonies.

Aint looking good, some of you should ask what NYC was like before Guiliani cleaned it up.

Look forward to watching NYC continue it's devolution. This'll be fun.

FTL isn't a culturally relevant a city to America as a whole so it's not really a 1for1 analogy. This is like wondering why people in other countries are so invested in American politics and acting as if their having an opinion on the US is just like someone in the US having an opinion on Monaco. 1 has significant implications to the rest of the country and the other objectively doesn't matter at all.

What's wrong with finding amusement in watching people get exactly what they voted for and proceed to cry about how bad it is? It's no secret I'm not liberal or progressive, why wouldn't it make sense that I'd find it funny to watch an ACTUAL SOCIALIST win an executive election and satisfying when he proceeds to fail miserably?

Well whats the point of even working hard anymore? They are already taking over 50% of your wages in total in the city, soon itll be what 60% or 70%?  It all starts with the nominal “just 2% wont make a difference” talk.

Think Mamdani's win reflects the strength of an overarching narrative that people are sick of divisive and anti-globalist politics, global wars, and the general zeitgeist of hate under the Trump regime.
