Managing autoimmune diseases

Hey monkeys,

I'm a college student seriously considering going into IB but I recently got diagnosed with 3 autoimmune disorders and I'm feeling pretty down lately.

Does anyone here have celiac disease? How do you manage it / talk about it with your colleagues? I got diagnosed pretty late and probably had it for years. I'm relieved to finally learn what was wrong with me after many years of suffering. My recent diagnoses lead me to decide I shouldn't have kids since these conditions are heritable. I worry if IB or banking is still an option for me because in a way I sort of know my career is going to be much more significant now and I don't mind working long hours for life but I worry about how you would bring this up with your colleagues or HR or if it's appropriate to do so. I thought generally it's not a good idea to discuss medical conditions at work. Thanks.

I'm confident I can manage my conditions by being extra careful. I just feel nervous that I don't want to be a burden on the team since I usually can't eat anything at social events. I know there are gluten-free options but the chance of cross-contamination is really high so I stick to just ordering a drink etc. or at most I can have salad. I'm really thankful for any advice you guys have and experiences you've had working with anyone with medical/autoimmune conditions. Thanks guys. I appreciate it.

Don't view life through the lens of your limitations. View life through the lens of your capabilities.
