Maybe I should've taken that job at Facebook instead... are we all making a big mistake here?

just one of those ruminating posts -- i graduated 2010 and currently work as an analyst at a hedge fund $6 Billion AUM with an all-in comp similar to first year bulge bracket investment banking analysts.

now im wondering if i should've followed job security instead and taken Facebook's offer for a tad bit less salary at $105k (which isnt bad at all at 22, but i got greedy), all-in with it going up to $120k after 3 years as an engineer and after that I still would have gone on to get an MBA.

look, it isn't about talent or brains or whatnot as much anymore these days: when the economy has no jobs, THE ECONOMY HAS NO JOBS. It's not like there's 500,000 open positions and some of you can't get a job cause you suck - it's because there REALLY ARENT ANY FUCKING JOBS. Now I am currently scared SHITLESS about getting laid off by next December. Actually my entire team might get laid off. Rumor has it that my VP will be going out the door, along with 14 other VPs. Most likely their associates will follow them out. And the associates' analysts will follow as well. Then what? Move back in with my parents? Go to business school and sit it out? Get out my college bartending contacts again? Pretty sure if I lose my job by next December, Facebook won't hire me back. Theres just too many desperate new grads by then who are probably smarter than me, who would take up Facebook for much much less. There are over qualified people who wont even qualify for underqualified jobs these days.

are we all making a big ass mistake here? dont be fooled by your school's recruiting calendars. when you step your first foot into a $150k job, you make a commitment. and that commitment can either make or break you. esp when you lose your job.

I would've taken the job at Facebook just so I could spy on all the hot college sluts with hidden picture albums.

lol that used to be a company perk -- they would give the engineers access to people's pictures and the statistics of how many times they viewed someone's profile during lunch breaks but nowadays I believe they set up some strict policies against this.

haha

I remember reading a disclaimer during facebook's early days that essentially read: "Notice: Facebook will NEVER reveal whose profile or pictures you view." I suppose they know their userbase well..

Just give it 3 years until FB is just a remnant of itself like MySpace and you'll be glad you're at a hedge fund.

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

HAHA u mad? bitch.

No, I don't think you made a big mistake. It feels like a big a mistake because you're still very early in your career.

If you're talented enough to get offers at facebook and a hedge fund, you're probably talented enough to secure another good job after you get laid-off (assuming you do get laid off, its still speculation). Either way, you're ahead of the competition.

But to be realistic, it will probably take a long time for you to find another job. Start looking now if you're so concerned, its easier to get a job when you already have a job.

Depends on what you enjoy doing, life is not just about money.

If you truly enjoy engineering or whatever you would've done at FB, then you were a fool. But if you love working within the financial markets and being at the hedge fund then you should have no regrets.

Youre in a good position, if youre worried about it find another job. It's always easier to find one while you have one.

It's a shitty job market, but I still think the same concepts apply. Network, network, network. Those who bust their asses will get the jobs. The only thing different between a good job market and a bad job market is that those who really don't have the passion will be weeded out quite easily.

I'm in a similar position since I ended my contract with a BB about a month ago. I'm getting my name out there like a crazy man with little to no bites. But I know it's bound to happen if you keep at it. Just feel fortunate we are young.

^^ Yaiknorite? You can't do shit with your life unless you work on Wall Street! I can't think of one person that has been successful by working for a website.

Not one.

You have made $150k+ since UG and if you get laid off you'd have to move in with your parents?
