New York Approves Tuition Free College

Well it has finally happened...we will now get to see an experiment with tuition free college in the U.S. as New York lawmakers approved the tuition free initiative this weekend as part of its state budget. An article on cnbc goes further into detail:

Under the plan — which New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo proposed in January — the state will supplement aid for in-state residents whose families earn $125,000 or less, providing tuition-free education at all state public two- and four-year colleges.

"Today, college is what high school was—it should always be an option even if you can't afford it," Gov. Cuomo said in a statement on the program's inclusion in the state budget. "The Excelsior Scholarship will make college accessible to thousands of working and middle class students and shows the difference that government can make."

Will this program end up being successful? What will be done to mitigate effects on the expected increase in demand for public and decrease in demand for private schools?

The thing is you can't leave the state. SUNY schools are really cheap to begin with. This is Cuomo Building up his bernie cred for higher office. I liked Mario, but this one is a chode.

Let's see. Student loans fueled the increase in college cost and the dilution in college worth. Now making it "free" Aka paid for with higher taxes will only make the issue worse.

And let's be real. College doesn't make you competitive in the world. A history degree earns about as much as minimum wage. We're going to end up taxing people to allow kids to study shit that will have no ROI.

I support it though. I wish we'd have free healthcare and college for all. Only until we break the back of this once great nation will we start acting with respect on the global stage and living within our means. Can't wait til the generals and arms companies start battling the socialists because you can't spend nearly a trillion on defense and give everything away for free.

At the very least, it is only happening in one state currently which will hopefully leave lessons to other states looking at similar concepts. I personally think its an unrealistic solution to a problem regarding the current affordability and value of a degree. I think there needs to be more direction provided regarding the impact on your life pursuing the wrong major can be. If younger kids were more aware, maybe we would have less people crying about how they have a ton of debt and no viable jobs due to the fact that they majored in something unusable.
