No Summer Intern Deaths This Year (so far)
No major stories of intern deaths from banking internship hours so far (to my knowledge - correct me if i'm wrong). Thank goodness, let's hope this trend continues.
From what I remember the last two years saw IBD summer intern deaths that arguably were closely related to the amount of hours they were working.
Obviously it's too early to make a judgement, but so far do you think this is a result of the rules banks put in place in regards to hours? Or just coincidence?
Deaths from a summer internship are so ridiculous. If a bank is working an intern so hard or if the intern thinks they have to be at the office for 20 hours, the bank should be delisted from the exchange.
How many hours is typical for an intern (for your junior yr internship)?
I recall that a summer intern was found dead in NYU's lafayette dorm building at the start of the summer.
didnt hear about this one. did they think the cause was in any way related to work hours?
He was at PJT. And no, it was during training week so it couldn't have been the hours
Took his own life, had a history of mental illness leading up to this. I don't think it's really related to banking
Other than the BAML London intern who died in 2013, what other intern deaths have occurred over the last 3 years? Should be noted that the inquest into the BAML intern's death found that there was no evidence that the hours definitely caused his epileptic seizure.
You're right. There haven't been many intern deaths, but there also have been analyst suicides in the past couple of years that people might be thinking of.
This reminds me of fraternity deaths in college.
If you're a frat star who wants to get into banking, watch out. If the hazing doesn't kill you, the banking might.
Isn't this an overblown topic? I believe the only story of death by being overworked occurred once in China? Other than that, I don't really think this is an issue but then again I am not in the banking industry...
I think I read in a newspaper that the intern death was a suicide.
You can give evidence and say that hours aren't definitively the cause. But how can any condition - pre-existing or new, physical or mental - be helped by working around the clock?
21,000 people die every day from not having enough food - to put how relevant this is into perspective.
If you or anybody you know ever feel like they're at a point where the hours are impacting their physical health to a point of near-death....it is an appropriate conversation to have with your boss. Letting you go home and get a good night's sleep heavily outweighs making you work at the risk of having an employee die on the job.
