If I only had 3 days to find a NYC apartment I would literally schedule 5-6 places per day to see and decide. 8 places per day if possible. If you have to go sight unseen, maybe choose a luxury apt building.

Just get an AirBNB for the first 1-2 months of NYC, then look for places while you're in the AirBNB. It'll save you the stress of moving right away and give you time to see what streets/neighborhoods you like..
