NYC Or Bust?

I never saw myself as the New York type, but sure enough, I found myself in NY upon graduation. Fast-forward to today--I'm reading an article from Tech Crunch, regarding the opening of Benchmark Capital's San Fran branch, which was largely motivated by the desire to be close to one the greatest entrepreneurial hubs.

What do you all think of the issue of geography in finance? Is it NYC or bust? Are there innumerable intangible benefits to being a financier in NYC-people, money, events, serendipitous encounters?

At the end of the day, it seems as if all the major deals and best start-ups are done/created in just a few geographic regions.

When choosing a career, do do you feel like you're losing out if you go to a place like Texas, or even LA? We seem to be living at a time when a lot of smaller cities are coming into their own. I'd be curious to hear some personal stories and opinions about the costs and benefits of each geographic region.

It's always good to spend two years in New York, ideally early in your career when you have a whole lot more patience for the city from hell.

I think there are career trade-offs that you need to make. Working outside New York isn't always associated with giving up money for more free time and more life, but it often is.

I think there is nothing wrong with making that trade-off.

I also think it is easier to climb the corporate ladder outside NYC, and outside of investment banking, for that matter.

The great thing about a place like NYC/London/Chicago is that the concentration of connections & financial companies is so great. I can probably network with more hedge funds and bankers in a day in NYC than I could in San Fran in a month. It's a great place to start your career 'mark your territory'.

With that said, no one can deny that the quality of life out west is just that much better. It's funny because I work for a company that has locations in both NYC and San Fran and when I've been out to San Fran I'm SO much more relaxed than I would be in the city. The pace and the style is so much different.

I always like to say if you can hang in NYC, you can hang anywhere--but I'm not necessarily trying to hang there forever, because eventually it's going to kill me. If you visit a hedge fund manager who's 40 in NYC and a hedge fund manager who's 40 in San Fran, it's quite obvious how much faster the NYC breed ages. It's just a law of life.. when you live it faster, you're going to age faster.

The perfect scenario for me would be to stay in NYC for 5~ or so years, make connections, do business, save some $$, and then create a life out west (or somewhere less stressful) where I can still communicate with my connections in NYC, but live easier than them.

Here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, you are the sucker.

The Grid. A digital frontier. I tried to picture clusters of information as they move through the computer. What did they look like? Ships? Motorcycles? Were the circuits like freeways? I kept dreaming of a world I thought I’d never see. And then, one day
