Owning Pets as FT IB Analyst
What pet is most realistic when starting out in IB? Would love a dog, but that might be too time consuming. Would a cat be feasible?

We have a cat. It's feasible as long as you don't live in Ohio.
Don't think you should do it, unless you have enough time to genuinely provide your pet with a good environment and activities. Cats are probably more suitable than dogs because they are less dependant but you'll still want to make sure you're getting a breed that can be indepedent / have another cat to socialize with.
I'm planning to get a small fish tank
It's feasible if you have a dog that is well trained PRIOR to entering IB...
Got my dog ~four years ago, and it's been awesome having him throughout my Analyst stint (~2 years). There are some significant costs associated with having him (i.e., walkers 1 - 2 times per day, vet visits, boarding for travel), but it has been well worth it.
