Porsche Cayman 981 GTS vs BMW M2 Comp

Thinking of buying a new car and I've narrowed it down to these two options, a 2015 Porsche Cayman GTS and a 2019 BMW M2 Competition. Porsche sounds great and is more of a sports car but the M2 is the ultimate M car, newer and quicker. I currently drive a '09 987 Cayman S which I love but I have seen it appreciate in price recently so looking to upgrade. I love both of these cars and was wondering what WSO's thoughts are and if they have any other suggestions around the PS45k mark?

I'd go for the M2 CS. It's as fun and sporty as the Cayman, but a bit more useable in the day to day. Can't comment on UK pricing, just lament that they get all the fun toys we missed out on here in the NA.

I drove a Base 981 Cayman 2015 with a Cobb Tune and now an FBO M4. Both have their pros and cons, I think the GTS would have enough kick that I would've been happy. I sold the Cayman during the used car market boom for significantly more than I was expecting because it wasn't as fast as I'd like. I loved the sound honestly of the flat 6 even with no exhaust and it sounded way better than the FBO M4. I loved handling and the looks of Porsche and honestly I'd trade my FBO M4 to get in a Cayman again - especially the 981 naturally aspirated ones.

You don’t need a lot of money to buy a 45k ps car. You just need 5k for the down payment and an income that can service the 800 per month payments.

Once you start making money you’ll realize that driving a fancy car is a lifestyle choice rather than something only obtainable by the wealthy. I’m 27, have had moderate career success and there’s basically no car I couldn’t buy right now, excluding the super cars that cost $800k+. Just a question of if you want to spend $20k per year on a car or not

You’re completely right, it is a lifestyle choice - I really enjoy cars and don’t spend as much money elsewhere. Financing in the UK is even cheaper, could get a 45k car for about 550ish a month with 5k down and they lend to anyone pretty much so you could see someone on 30k a year driving a 45k car it’s insane. I am buying cash though due to my current car rising in value and having the rest of the cash to spend.

quick question - not related to the cars but the financing. Would you opt for Hire Purhcase or PCP?

Personally, I think Hire Purhcase makes a bit more sense as you don't have the balloon payment in the end (e.g. I'm not sure if i'll have £60k in 4 years time to pay off the entire thing in cash).

I thought about possibly financing the M2C as it's newer and available. HP makes more sense as you can get a lower rate of ~3%. PCP is always 7%+ and like you said got to pay the balloon at the end. There are some 0% PCP deals but always on new cars so you have to take the big depreciation hit.

I am going to buy the car cash though as I’ve saved up to pay the excess on top of my current car’s value.
