Reading during FT work
As we all know, everyday life can become quite hectic and unpredictable in banking.
I personally love to read and learn from books which I have plenty of time to as a student. However, I would love to hear from some of you full-timers if you actually manage to squeeze in time to read: fiction, non-fiction, biographies, something else?
I think intellectual curiosity is one of the most important skills any student can learn. Would be a shame if that had to be dropped due to a strict schedule.

Not FT but it honestly depends on culture. If you're not doing anything for several hours, some senior members won't mind it but others will. A good cheat code is the bathroom or if they have some kind of dining hall. Also keep in mind, a lot of senior members are gone after 9 so that might be the perfect time to crack open the book.
good points. am just concerned that flipping through a few pages during “work hours” might be considered slacking off and be negatively viewed - despite the positive intent of the curiosity behind the action
It's honestly not. I and many other people have sat at our desks waiting for something to do at several points. Like I said, it depends on culture. Especially over the next few months when deal flow is slowed down, it will definitely be helpful, especially with work from home.
Is there a point in reading? I never really read entire books and was able to get by in college only reading some case studies and stuff. Will that hurt me in a finance career?
honestly, perhaps there might not be. many smart people don’t read books and get by more than fine. personally, I enjoy reading books as they serve me as a source of condensed information/learnings I would not find anyways. nothing wrong with not being interested in reading.

My answer is mixed. So no, but honestly a lot of successful people in life do enjoy reading. Not saying that there's anything in particular that you are going to learn but in my opinion it is helpful in the long term. At the very least you should be reading non fiction at least every once in a while. Towards later in your career you will have more time for it.

Real talk though: I don't ever get time to read books because I'd rather just read the summaries online. Need to be efficient here.
How feasible is it to just pull up a PDF book? Seems like it would be less conspicuous than flipping through a paperback.
Try Gutenberg dot org, it´s free and not IP-banned in the US.
also Archive.org which is an online library. They go so far as to scan the original books - it’s much more enjoyable that reading pdfs or kindle
