You can say this for many cuisines, but NYC has become a mecca of sorts for good sushi, at least in the United States.

See if your company will let you drop 150 per for Sushi Nakazawa. You will not get sushi nearly as good anywhere else in the country.

Nakazawa is too expensive for me to go on my own dime, but I frequent Domodomo in west village. Great food for the price

I'd posit that Sasabune is just as good or better, though it's omakase-only. In the same hood (UES), D'Alsace is a good northern-French place if you into that type of stuff.

Tamarind is really good south-Indian food, poppadums and all. I think it has a Michelin star, so it's fiery for both the wallet and the tongue.

For the tree-huggers among us, Dirt Candy is hands-down the best vegetarian food I've ever eaten. Reservations are made a month in advance.

For Scandinavian fare, Aquavit (2 stars, hurts the wallet) and Scandinavia House (WTF, an awesome restaurant in a museum).

I have a friend who lives in the country, and it's supposed to be an hour from 42nd Street. A lie! The only thing that's an hour from 42nd Street is 43rd Street!

Greg Lippmann ("Jared Vennett" or Ryan Gosling in The Big Short) used to have a sushi spreadsheet ranking the top sushi spots all over NYC when he was still at DB. Last I heard it's still around on the floor, and that there are some slightly outdated versions online, but something that could be interesting to look up.

Sushi Nakazawa is great.

EBITDA rules everything around me

visiting NYC...i suggest you find a date for dinner...eating alone is no fun

1) you must goto a NYC steakhouse...preferably either Peter Luger or WolfGang (i prefer wolfgang)....and get the canadian bacon at the bar with drinks before your meal 2) Ramen at Ippudo (get a beer and the pork bun sandwich at the bar while you wait...seriously) 3) Sushi of Gari (or Ninja if you want to impress a female or a group). These are not necessarily the best sushi places for just fish on rice...but they are fun for a group 4) Italian - 1st, grab a slice of pizza at Joes on 6th and Bleeker....then goto Babbo (reservations recommended)...actually..reverse that order....goto Joes for a slice AFTER Babbo. 5) Pearl Oyster Bar - get a bucket of steamers for your app...and the lobster roll for dinner. 6) goto Katz and get a corned beef or pastrami sandwich with pickles and half sour tomatoes

the list could go on...you really need to narrow down your preferences...

just google it...you're welcome

You are correct, that was a rather broad question....I’ve been a number of times for work and whatnot and have tried a variety of places with different food types. Haven’t been to one I didn’t like..they’ve all been great. I’ve tried:

Beauty & Essex Momofuko Indochine Pearl Oyster Bar Some restaurant/bar that was on a small boat next to the pier??? Wish I remembered the name Carmine’s

I would say Peter Lugers or Keens. Keens is classic and very very delicious. Tons of famous people in history's pipes on the ceiling including Teddy Roosevelt.

wrong! mushroom buns are where it's at - my crew used to go there and that's ALL we'd order :) tried other buns and no, mushroom buns..

  • Sweet Chick - on Ludlow St, tasty comfort food, folding chairs, nothing visually fancy, but the food is really tasty.
  • il Corso - on West 55th, delicious Italian food, casual setting, soft lighting, definitely a bit on the more chill n' romantic side
  • Crimson & Rye - East 54th - fun bar with table seating - drinks and apps, amazing range of bourbons and whiskeys and other hard liquors
  • Crave Fishbar - [believe there are 2 or 3 locations, I've only tried the 2nd Ave spot] - lots of seafood and shellfish but also beef and chicken. Their happy hour includes "a buck a shuck" $1 oysters - they offer a variety of about 10-12 different oysters, depending on the season and availability
  • Zaika - East 44th - wonderful Indian food and they make an excellent Manhattan
  • Despaña - Broome St in SoHo - Spanish food boutique grocery market in the front, but they also serve an amazing range of hot and cold tapas [chorizos and morcilla, cheeses, various sardines, anchovies and jamones/hams] and there's seating in the back. Delicious coffee. Great place for breakfast or lunch.

Isn't it?! And if you blink, you'd walk right past Despaña as its frontage is like 12 feet wide at most. A friend was in town from DC and we started our day there, sharing a wedge of tortilla de papa and about 4 or 5 other tapas... he actually got me to try the white anchovies with bechamel sauce and I was truly impressed [I don't hate anchovies, but I usually find them too strong tasting for anything beyond making puttanesca sauce]. There were also samples we tried of several hams and morcilla. I wound up buying green olives stuffed with cheese, honey with figs, black olive tapenade and a couple of other items. If we had not planned a whole day of walking around Little Italy and Chinatown, I would have bought much more. Already plotting my own next trip there for the holidays, to get stuff for Noche Buena. Enjoy the iberico!

If you've lived in Manhattan for 10 years (i.e. way too long) you always end up in some hole-in-the-wall joint. The ones with a little old chinese lady, or grumpy italian guy who yells at his pizza boys.

The fine dining only happens when a worthy friend/family member come from out of town.

if you haven't been to golden unicorn in chinatown for weekend dimsum brunch, you have to go at least once...its what you imagine dim sum to be...trolley carts of steaming dim sum...all chinese staff...mostly chinese customers...packed between 11am-2pm...either go early, or go late...early (10:30am) is better.

just google it...you're welcome

You'll have to PM me for my hole in the wall joints - those I guard much more jealously.
