Self-Important Graduation Posts on LinkedIN

Has anyone else been on LinkedIN lately to see a bunch of posts something along the lines of "Pleased to announce I graduated (honors degree) from (ivy league school) and will spend the next year volunteering to save the sea turtles from racial microaggressions before beginning my job with MBB consulting firm" Attached is picture of this person smiling in a graduation gown in front of a sign for their college or university.

I mean sure those are some accomplishments to be proud of, but this type of thing reeks of someone desperately trying to show the world how great of a person they are. To me it shows a total lack of self-awareness.

"thebrofessor" people that need validation from a digital network are doomed for a life of misery.

Not a sign of the brofessor requiring bananas for validation. It's just evidence that he contributed a lot to the forum.

Don't be so quick to judge.... . . . . . ......maybe he's speaking from experience.

Kidding aside, it's hard to get validation when people don't even know who you are, which is different than publishing things on your LinkedIn page.

One of my model friends has this old (60+) French dude who creeps up on her IG account and literally comments something on the lines of "looking sexy babe :*" everyday since early 2012.

There's another dude, some doctor fellow from some South American shithole, who literally writes frickkin 20-30 lines of poetry on each of her pictures. Some of the creeps really are unbelievable.

I hope Zuckie gets remembered for breeding insecure kids, stalkers and creeps.

super creepy, and what makes me scratch my head is the fact that (even though at the older end of the spectrum) I'm a millenial, I grew up with AIM, eventually got texting in college, and finally got a blackberry a couple years after graduation, so I get why technology is important.

the distinction comes when you use technology as the sole medium of communication. it's a great add on, and it's made keeping in touch with far flung friends infinitely easier. if it weren't for group chats, I doubt my old roommates and I would talk daily. but it should be left as that: an add-on to enhance the experiences of life.

perfect example, a few weeks back I was at the beach with my wife, caught some surf, and was taking a break while the rest of my in laws arrived and we noticed two young girls coming down to the beach. "college students," I thought, probably enjoying the week after exams before they do whatever they're going to do this summer: work full time, take classes, study abroad, go back home, what a great way to spend some time together without tourists, parents, etc., making me reminisce about those same experiences I had when I was in college. that precious gap between exams and memorial day was sacred. upperclassmen stayed and partied, tourists hadn't yet invaded our beach, and the stress of working 2 part time jobs with taking accounting hadn't yet set in.

the girls plopped down on the beach maybe 50 yards away from us, no one around them, and were giggling and carrying on, like any red blooded human does. they were having fun, so was our crew. and aside from the occasional glance, we were minding our own business. and then the phones came out. out of the corner of my eye I saw that unmistakable selfie arm, that looks about as awkward as Dustin Johnson's wrist cock at the top of what's soon to be a 350 yard drive, or maybe the same position Richard Sherman's hand is in right after batting away yet another ball, but not before his arm has dropped. needless to say, we people watched. the girls did the classic duck face, head cock, ass out shots, very unoriginal repertoire I might add. "cool," I thought, "they're snapping some pictures to laugh at, and then will go back to enjoying this beautiful day." did I mention it was 85, only a smattering of clouds, and a light breeze (pretty perfect)? I was wrong. the entire purpose of this beach visit was to capture some shots for the 'gram, as the girls promptly left immediately after their photo shoot, no more than 5 minutes after they'd arrived. I have to think that 15 minutes later, some guy whose most visited websites are BroBible, PornHub, Total Frat Move, and Vineyard Vines liked her pictures, instead of enjoying the ocean for those last few hours of sunlight.

call me a luddite, call me a curmudgeon, but when technology becomes your life instead of enhancing it...Houston, we have a problem.

mark my words, if there are ever any little brofessors running around, no phones at the dinner table, and playtime will include being outside. you need to scrape your knee and get bitten by ants a few times before you're a well adjusted human being, you can't just be good at a duck face, lumbar lordosis, and photoshop if you want to make it in this world.

I really want to read some of these posts lol.

What do i type to find them?

Absolute truths don't exist... celebrated opinions do.

I read the sample you post.

Looks to me like one of those "nice, but I kinda don't care" things. No harm in posting that type of stuff.

I'm really interested in reading the extreme ones, like the one that was recently posted about the kid who didn't get into PE the first go. That one was too funny.

Absolute truths don't exist... celebrated opinions do.

Have seen a ton of these and I can say with much frustration that people live for the approval and recognition from others rather than themselves. LinkedIn posts in general are pretty cringe-worthy these days unless you're sharing an article or career update.

Felt bad for a guy who asked if anyone had an extra basketball hoop on LinkedIn...smh.

Who i gotta link with in order to watch these comedians lol.

Care to expand on the basketball dude?

Y'all sound like a bunch of salty old farts who hate technology. Yeah, it might seem a little self-congratulatory to post about this shit on FB/Insta/SC/whateverthehellsocialmediaplatform, but then what the hell is a graduation ceremony if not more of the same? All of this is just the new version of sending a letter to grandma to let her know that her favorite grandson has graduated from college. Don't like seeing it? Just stick to reading the broadsheets and stay off social media for a while. Hell, I barely use Facebook anymore except to message people whose phone numbers I don't have.

All this pomp and circumstance is really for the family and friends.

Unless you're a visionary/entrepreneur/thought leader.

Count how many of these include the phrase "it wasn't easy, but it was worth it" or some variation. Worth it so you could post this humblebrag on LinkedIn, I guess.

Gimme the loot

To play devil's advocate, for the amount of money we all had to drop on college (no scholarships for this idiot), I think a little self congratulation is in order.

For most people the completion of UG is the first thing they've had to do purely on their own. I mean there are so many teachers/friends/liquor stores that look the other way at clearly not the 6'1'' Mantis Tobaggan pictured on my ID, to thank, but it really is the first taste of success that was arrived at by purely personal choices. Gotta let the kids live it up a little all you cynical workplace folk (myself included).

It also bothers me when other people do this. But these people will ALWAYS be on the coming up on your feeds, and there is no stopping them. The only thing you have control over is how much time you are spending scrolling, which I would recommend limiting as much as possible.

There is significant research that shows that people in this generation are becoming more and more depressed as a result of looking at other people's glamorous lives on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram (when in reality, their lives are not all that glamorous).

Spend less time scrolling - more time focusing on gratitude. You will boost dopamine and serotonin levels naturally.

Very true points and I would have SB'ed you were it not for the self-promotion within the post. I mean, signatures are meant for that.

Plus, advertising on a site that already has such services is like telling God in heaven that the devil is an amazing guy. Or telling McKinsey partners that Blackstone MDs make much more than them.

Yes there is. You unfollow them.

I think it all started with that Venezuelan kid who ended up in Google. Jorge something.

Kid had an amazing profile though. GS + McKinsey + Google - the Holy Trinity.

Of all of the awfulness that's on LinkedIn these days - from every HR professional writing hiring stories, to people posting political garbage, to business memes, to business advice from the unemployed - you pick someone proud that they graduated from college as the thing that annoys you?
