The best book I ever read is either Hyperion by Dan Simmons, or The Alphabet of Manliness by Maddox. Age is a crucial factor here, as I read both around the age of 16. Hyperion was eye-opening about what science fiction could be and let me see how cinema barely touches on real sci-fi, as do most people. The Alphabet of Manliness brought a serious bit of humor to what I was learning about at the time, which was how to be a man. I had issues with my father growing up and never had time to laugh - that book made life itself hilarious, and it changed me in a good way.

The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway

I've read this (and Gatsby) every summer since High School. The key to "getting" the book, because there isn't much by way of story or plot, is that you've got to look at it as a character study- The characters Hemingway describes are like perfect archetypes for my friends and the people I have encountered throughout my 20s. The way they interact just feels perfectly true to life - no overly irrational fights, no stupid cheesy resolutions: you will read this book and start to see people you know in each of the characters.

  • The guy who just can't get over the one girl, but just stays in the friend zone

  • The one girl from above who says she is doing big things, but is mostly just doing whatever is popular and makes people like her

  • The guy who can never get over his own self-pity, etc.

In the book, they are hanging out in Paris and then travel to Pamplona, Spain for the running of the bulls; but they may as well be a group of our friends hanging out in NYC then going on a roadtrip to a music festival. It's short, a quick read, and you get something new out of it each time. I guess I just really like that the way we interact today is no different than 100 years ago, because people don't change.

Millionaire Next Door was pretty good and I just read the Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck which definitely helps better reign in your emotions to certain situations at work and outside

My Dad had me read Millionaire Next Door when I was in high school. I have saved parts of it to re-read. Going to read it all again soon. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC read! Eye opening about building wealth.
