According to this person's (extraordinarily interesting) analysis, virtually no Ashley Madison users were actually women, from Gizmodo [link inside post]:
Out of 5.5 million female accounts, roughly zero percent had ever shown any kind of activity at all, after the day they were created.
Ashley Madison took money from 31 million male cheaters, gave them virtually no opportunity to actually cheat, and then charged them to cancel their accounts. Staff apparently spent a lot of time creating fake profiles to lead the male cheaters along and to waste their time. In addition, the site promised to delete user information upon cancellation, something that they clearly failed to do, which has no doubt f*cked tens of thousands of would-be cheaters.
Ashley Madison appears to be the single most brilliant way to stick it to tens of millions of would-be male cheaters. Ironically, the site has facilitated virtually no actual infidelity other than maybe a statistically insignificant few encounters.

This now gives free reign to any man who was actually on this website to say they were framed.
Nah. But it was a smart way to cash in on that particular impulse.

I would imagine most normal and sane women wouldn't be looking to hook up from a site whose only population is random married dudes who are looking to cheat on their spouses discretely.

They're not saying zero. They're saying that of the 5.5 million female accounts, so few of them were real that it was virtually zero, especially when 31 million real men are going after the 10,000 or so real women. There's also the caveat that many of the potentially fake accounts were actually real people where the person behind the account never actually utilized the platform after signing up.
