Switch to Finance
Hey guys I'm a Sophomore at a non-target I switched into Finance this year from Pre-Med, as I realized my interest and strengths lean more towards Finance.
As I'm new is there any resources or any next steps you guys recommend for me to learn anything and everything there is, such as what to aim for in terms of internships and recruiting.
Also Finance is so broad and I don't know what I would like doing or be good at any way I can get exposure to some of the fields out there?
If it helps I like anything Buy Side but then again who doesn't but I know it will be difficult for me to break in considering my GPA. My Freshman year GPA was weak because of the difficulty in the science classes I was taking but my business core classes (micro, macro, accounting) this year have been easy I have been able to keep a 4.0 so far.
Probably time to read the classics like Barbarians at the Gate, Den of Thieves, When Genius Failed (LTCM), Market Wizards, etc. Do research about the industry and then figure out where you want to go. Try to get a finance internship this summer and next summer.
What are some companies that would let me intern I’m willing to do unpaid as long as the work is meaningful. I’ve applied to over 80 places and have only gotten 4 interviews so far. A NWM recruiter reached out but from what I’ve read it’s not the best place to intern.
Apply to as many places as you possibly can. The offers will start rolling in.
80 places isn't that many places. If you're applying to 10 places per day, that's only 8 days of applying. You need to apply to hundreds of places if not thousands.
don't be thirsty. Read the WSO interview guide and you'll be golden. You already completed the bare minimum courses. I would recommend an econ course focused on banking, banking and economics for your country. Take a course on corporate finance or securities valuation and you'll be etting yoruself up for a smooth transition. Remember to network network network.
