I thought he was like an ED to MD level since his bonus was massive and he had a huge office. Also he was able to pitch an idea that his whole office laughed at, so I imagine that means he's in an upper management position for being able to do so (given that if he didn't have discretion a manager would have stopped him)

He's based on Greg Lippmann, DB's Global Head of ABS and CDO Trading at the time. Certainly not an associate or VP.
I'm sure if anyone below MD went to their manager with a similar trade, that shit got shut-down real quick.
