The Most Powerful Movie(s) You have Seen
One of my favorite films centering on the ethics of war and torture is "Unthinkable." With Samuel L. Jackson. I think the key issue in the movie is the means doesn't justify the ends. I've seen this movie a lot and analyze the script and plot and really like it. What are the most powerful movies you have seen?
Another powerful movie I have not seen in a long time (since I was a kid) was "The Power of One." I distinctly remember this scene where the kid is curled up in the corner and people pissing on him. Unforgettable scene. I think the movie centered around overcoming adversity.
Also - "Chariots of Fire"
The Italian movie "Life is Beautiful."
The dad protects his son's innocence from the horrors of the holocaust til the very end. Very emotional all the way through.
School Ties with Brandon Fraser and 42 with Chadwick Boseman. Both movies are about bias and sports.
1. Click - Adam Sandler movie about a guy who stumbles upon a remote that allows him to pause and fast forward through life.
2. Only the Brave - Josh brolin, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges, Jennifer Connelly - true story about a group of firefighters who risk everything to defend a town from a wildfire
I love how Click is a middling early 2000s Adam Sandler comedy with a quite profound screenplay
American Psycho
Gattaca. That last scene with the doctor letting Vincent continue with his job hits in a good way.
Borat
2001: A Space Odyssey
Schindler's List
The last movie that really got me in my feels was Hacksaw Ridge.
Dude stood his ground on his values and proved himself to his peers that he could serve regardless of them and became a hero in the end. Super powerful message, imo.
All Quiet on the Western Front (2022). WWI was brutal.
Great film and unapologetically brutal. Imo it's even better watching the film in German for authenticity
School of Rock
Grown Ups 2
Just Go With It
Requiem for a Dream
Yessss!!!!!! Bro at the end with that hole in his arm…. every teenager should have to watch this movie …. drugs are bad kids (except weed is ok)
This is the answer
The passion
Aftersun
Atonement
Totally underrated thread and I'm sorry I missed it first time.
From my head "Boyhood" (I'm at that age) and "A Beautiful Mind" (I know cliche but wow). Also, for this last one it depends on your background I think (some people will not get it at all and others will get it immediately), but "Billy Elliot"
12 angry men or shawshank redemption
We're still around Christmas so Trading Places works, my answer for the other ten months is Das Boot. (in subtitled German) Tieffer nummer eins. Tieffer. It's tons of boredom followed by sheer terror. There is one Nazi on the boat, and everybody else is just trying to do their job and not die in a job where 1/3 of people didn't come home.
Spoiler alert, but Broken Lizard's "Beerfest" has like a dozen Das Boot references, including casting Jürgen Prochnow as the baron. (He was also in the 1984 version of Dune, and a popcorn favorite of mine: Judge Dread) It's not their best film (Liter of cola, Farva?) but it's up there.
+1 for Unthinkable.
+1 for Das Boot.
No mention yet of Downfall.
