The Ol' Gay Marriage Debate! Kinda...

I'm not anti-gay or anything but I have a question to ask. Heck my best friend and little brother is happily dating another guy and I give zero s****.

This situation made me start thinking, if a gay co-worker (over beers) asked you what you thought about gay marriage and you said "totally OK with it, it's none of my business what other people want to do with their lives and if they truly love each other then I'm not gonna stop them. However, I don't really think its natural but that's a whole different story". Is this PC?

Too much emphasis on PC these days. However, it actually is completely natural ... in ancient Greece it was weird if you weren't a little gay on the side. Animals get gay every once in a while too, I've had many dogs get gay with me, I just tell them "It's not my style bro, but I respect your life choices".

Don't waste your life only thinking about money and prestige

Does it deter or encourage the dog?

what's the definition of natural? i don't think simply because a few animals do it, it makes it natural for human beings the "animals do it too" argument also fails to capture the differences in scale it happens in animals, versus humans

i'm not sure whether or not it's PC, but if i were gay and you said that, i might take offense

"It's not my thing" or "It grosses me out and I don't, but hey, to each their own" is about as far as you can go. PC is one thing, insulting someone you're hanging out with is another. Consider the REASON you're going to comment. Not everyone cares what you think and you have to realize that they could just as easily lean over the table and shoot back "Yeah, well you're a fucking wuss who can't do ten push ups and that's unnatural." Think.....and then speak.

It is natural. Learn your history. Modern civilization, especially America and other regimens with authoritarian political structures are the deviation. Repressed sexuality can be sublimated into all sorts of useful things like state worship, hero worship, mind control, or redirected against fictional (or real) enemies with the purpose of reinforcing ingroup/outgroup dynamics. It's actually very well studied. The more afraid of homosexuality you are, the easier you are to manipulate. Why do you think repressive regimens target gays? They need something to control and synthesize into an 'issue' and given only a fraction of any population is gay they make an easy target. So get comfortable with it and make your decision. That's kind of how a free society works.

Personally, I have zero desire to doink a dude mostly because I just like women so much. Growing up Catholic also kind of skews my decision making and I'm ok with that. I do like slightly-bi chicks though, huge fan.

The only thing I don't understand is when guys act like "fairies". I mean, the Greek god of warriors and hunting screwed whoever/whatever he wanted and his virility was the measure of his manliness, not his preferences. By their definition, MEN do whatever the hell they want because that's what men do. But he didn't put a wig on and act like a 14 year old girl. I don't get that whole thing. Anyone have any insight into this?

You talking about Ares? He was god of war, not warriors/hunting. Artemis was the goddess of hunting.

Heracles

Good call, I'm not entirely accurate there. Should have been Greek huntsman, warrior, and paragon of masculinity.

.....someone paid attention in classics, way to go dude!

Exactly. Just say, 'do whatever, man' and move on. There is literally nothing good that comes out of office conversations like this.

If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses - Henry Ford

Here's a good summary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heracles#Lovers

Bottom line, his sexual preference didn't define him. The fact that he was THE MAN is why he was worshipped. Roman soldiers were encouraged to sleep with each other because the generals knew that they would fight harder to protect people they loved. Again, not my thing, but homosexuality plays a major role in history and the whole modern concept of what a man is (aka, they buy Axe) is a result of politics, not nature.

$50 bucks the OP got roofied.

Frankly, I would be suspicious of your coworker. Either he wants a slice or he is baiting you to see if he can get offended. This isn't casual bar conversation.

Hang out with some new people bro. This dude is looking to get you into trouble.

Are you so eager to lash out that you didn't even read the question? OP never said he was asked this. It's a completely hypothetical situation.

I see zero lashing out. Yes I read the question and my hypothetical response is hang out with someone who doesn't bait you with questions like this. Anyone that asks you this is either a closet bigot or looking for an argument, neither worth hour time.

Blackhat is right though, why is this even a thread.

"I don't really think its natural"

This is not "politically correct" because the statement lacks any real meaning so its only purpose is to showcase your latent discrimination.

What exactly does "natural" mean? If it means in line with how human beings are hardwired, then it obviously is since no one can consciously control their sexuality and not everyone is necessarily hardwired the same way. If by natural you mean "doing something that is in line with its intended purpose" then as Anihilist hinted at all sex not intended for procreation is unnatural, whether that's straight, homosexual, married, unmarried, etc.

Just because I have no interest in hooking up with dudes does not mean I would go around making clearly derogatory statements like that.

And this is why you simply avoid the question.

Unless you are lock step with the PC gestapo you will have every word twisted and turned against you. Run away and hang out with people who won't burn you at the stake for misconstrued comments.

It's about not insulting people out of ignorance or malice. The "PC" concept became obsolete quite a while ago. If you interact with variety of different people, it's inevitable you're going to piss someone off by accident....but when it's intentional is where you get in trouble.

I do agree with you though: focusing on work is the best way to sidestep this stuff. It's not part of my job description to discuss people's personal life. By extension, my personal life is also off limits unless I bring it up. Basic common sense stuff that's always worked: don't discuss sex and politics in polite/business company. However, on WSO, let it rip and get it out of your system! :)

Bateman Begins

After much careful thought and reflection, I have come to the conclusion that gay marriage is bad because all marriage is bad.

Gays deserve the right to be miserable just as much as we do.

Marriage is like beer. No mater how sick it makes you and no mater how many times you quit, you will take it up again.
