What’s the threshold between taking on more responsibility and coming off as a try hard? Esp for juniors

Ultimately it's the team that will give you the additional responsibility, you don't need to keep asking but it depends on how good you are and the culture of the team, and smaller bank vs. BB. You first need to be good  and make people to trust you. People form opinions very quickly and it takes time to change their mind, so you need to kill it in the first few days and show the right attitude

When people understand you're good and if that's the culture of the team, letting you take on more responsibility will be the next step. At that point you just have to show them you're able to do it and will not crush under the pressure

At least that's how it worked for me

Also agree with what the other user said, it's not about asking for more and more work, it's about the type of work you do. Back when I was an intern for example it happened that I worked by myself with a VP on the CIM and also help on the model for a massive sell side because everyone was busy with other stuff. I was very happy to do it and did great work and always reassured the analyst that I would take care of what was coming. That showed I was already thinking and working above your my pay grade and the VP  who had been at a top BB told me that I was working at A2 level rather than intern. So yeah all of this to say: kill it and let people know that you're ready to take weight off their shoulders if needed

Sourcing the most/biggest deals, go-to guy for building/changing the core model being used to analyze the deal, point-person handling important leads in the pipeline, trusted to be the one to pass along information/explain new objectives to the juniors on the team.

Measured by the size of the checks being written, how smooth the processes are running, how few mistakes you make, and how the team you're managing is performing (metrics like outreach, # of calls had, bankers spoken w/, etc.).
