Under 21 - Sticky Situations
Hey I'll be doing an SA stint as a soph in a BB this summer. I'm going to do my best to land a return offer for the following year and FT after that, but I've heard that I'll need to be willing to hang out with my group in order to show the social aspect of myself.
So basically, I'm not turning 21 anytime soon.
Obviously, I'll know how to handle myself during company events with HR and whatnot. I'll just get a coke or something and socialize.
But will I ever be put in a situation where FT analysts in my group will say "Let's go for some drinks at the bar." How would I be able to deal with this situation? I'm not planning to get a fake or anything, but wondering if theres a better way to deal with this other than just following along only to get carded or told to leave at the bar.

I went to NY before i was 21 and never got carded. but I am a girl. think it depends on where you go, but my impression was that NY was pretty lax. Vegas is another story.

Just tell them you are under 21 and can't get in, if you don't make a big deal about it they won't either. There are plenty of ways to mesh with the analysts other than drinking with them.
They are hiring you and know how old you are, so it's unlikely that they will put you in a shitty position. It's also unlikely you get carded if you roll into a busy bar with a suit and some other older dudes and act like you belong there. It also heps if you talk to a female bartender, as they are usually less strict......

Most companies will take you somewhere that you don't have to be 21 (ie- wear a wristband). If you do go to these, and do have the wrist band, don't drink and if you do, ESPECIALLY don't get drunk.
My experience with NYC bars is that they have been relatively strict as of late. Maybe not so much for early evening drinks (6ish) but most places I go to just have a bouncer carding everyone at the door, including girls once you get to 8/9pm. I think you can just tell them you are under 21, and ask if the place you are going to is strict. Either they will say they are, and you politely say you will just hang back (which sucks but deal with it) or they say no and you go and give it a shot.
When I was U21 (NYC), if I was wearing a suit, I seldom got carded. but it's better to remind your fellow analysts that you're a soph and not 21, just to avoid any potentially embarrassing situations. And if you're ever at a restaurant or bar/rest - they will never card you IME. especially if you're wearing a suit.
Hmmm... I am pretty surprised to see the other responses about never getting carded in nyc. I have been living in the city for 4 yrs now, am 25+ and have ALWAYS been asked for ID at bars. Seriously, there are a couple of times when I did not have had my ID on me and pleaded with the bouncers to let me in, but NYC is pretty strict with checking ids.
If I were in your shoes, I wud just tell your colleagues u r not 21 yet and cannot get into bars.

Sorry to say, but reality seems to be saying otherwise.
Guess my user id is a little misleading? Asian, more specifically Indian. I am fairly tall and no one has ever said to me that I look younger than my age.

Don't drink. Tell them you're only 20. You won't seem like a prude if they know you're 20. If you don't order a drink and don't tell them you're 20, you may look like a prude.
Also, if you order a drink and then they find out you're only 20, that would be much more serious than looking like a prude.
Do whatever will be less stressful for you. There are 100 other, more important things for you to worry about on your superday.
I mean, it's essentially a non-issue. Most likely, they won't care if you have a drink even if they know you're 20. The guy would have to be a real prick to make an issue out of it but if you want to play it safe, just don't order a drink. If I was in your situation, I would just nurse a beer. Definitely don't get more than 1 or 2 drinks though.
If the resturant/bar doesnt care about IDs, then go easy at first and get a beer. After that, just join in with what the analyst are doing. I think the key is to open up with a couple drinks so they can get to know you better, to see if you are someone they could stand being in the office. Take it easy and have fun.
I doubt you will be able to say with 100% certainty that the restaurant will or will not ask for your ID, then I would advise you to stay away from the alcohol. It would be damn embarrassing if they asked you for your ID, and you didn't have one.
I wouldn't do it at dinner, seriously no at the dinner is gonna remember who did or did not get a drink. Definitely go out for drinks as a SA, no need to risk it while interviewing.
You do not need to order a drink, it's only going to cause you more stress and you may seem awkward when you don't know what to get. I was at a dinner last week and only a few of the people ordered drinks.
Some old business men prefer that you drink. I was meeting with big guy in business last year, and he insisted that I have a few glasses of wine. If I refused, it would not have went well. It would be best if you had a fake id.

just order a drink, if they card, say you don't have an ID on you, don't make a big deal about it
Also, if you don't get carded, slam 4-5 down really fast to show you mean business.
The only people who care about underage drinking are HR. If they aren't present, drink away. The professionals won't care.
say you're too young to drink. Then bust out your bag of blow and sniff a fat line.

I didn't drink with my FT interview dinner. I got a job. I did get shit for it though. We went out for drinks after the dinner and I drank then, so I showed them I wasn't a prude, but that I had enough sense to not drink with dinner.
Its the law.. you have no choice.. just get water or softdrink.. or rootbeer... if they know that you are underage and still insist, then go order some...
