Vive l' fromage de l'gouverment
From the people that brought us the long vapid gaze, questionable boundaries of male heterosexuality, and cheese so funky it instantaneously puts you down wit o.p.p. now comes, fiscal responsibility?!
Yes, apparently there is a place where Nicolas Sarkozy can look like Milton Friedman. It is a wonderful place where streets are paved with cafes, moustaches are soiled with frappes and the local Mickey D's will replace your side of Medium Fries with a cracked pack of Marlboro Reds.
Now, after the petulant period of multiple monarch decapitations, an imperial policy advocating the vicious spread of sitting on ass, a century long pouty avoidance of the industrial revolution, multiple world war self prostitution successes and most recently attempting to remake gay Paris for into a contemporary Shariastan; mis amies are finally starting to get with the program. The program started by their president...Francois Mitterrand...in the early 19 fucking 80's. They are upping the retirement age to 62.
The current French pension deficit which sits at roughly $ 40 million may quadruple by 2050 without reform and apparrently zee fwogs ahr a liddl beet nehvous, no?
"This is the most unfair reform to have been decided by the president ... Nicolas Sarkozy has decided to make the poor pay," said Francois Hollande from the French Socialist Party.
Reports of Nancy Pelosi reaching out to Mr. Hollande with offers of a both tug and job, were neither confirmed, nor denied.
Grab your baguettes and discuss.

Because I'm from America, baby.
The only spelling bee I care about is the one cloning itself down the road to junk bondage.
Also...because real cheese...comes in individually wrapped packets.
You don't actually express any opinion in your post, do you? The first half is about putting together the few clichés that constitute your knowledge of this country, and the second part doesn't make much sense either. Now, you may just be a troll. In this case kudos, I think you're a great and successful troll. Even more so if you're actually French and successfully hiding it.
You might want to add to your troll post that socialist/striking/lazy culture is so rooted into French minds that even French soccer players went on strike in the middle of the world cup. (And were subsequently bashed by local newspapers.)
But granted, it is not untrue to say that the French public opinion is more socialist (one would say unaware of economic realities) than in other countries. And even more conservative/liberal leaders like Mr Sarkozy have to cope with this. In the end, it is a country where philosophy is a compulsory material to finish highschool, and economy is not.
Thanks for the backhanded compliment, great way to start up a conversation. The idea of posting here is to get the input of others, if I went into detailed analysis of how fucked up France is (specifically, on the long term economic front) the site would crash.
As for their foot ballers, the issue is rather complex in my opinion. Surely, their "strike" seems socialist on its face (and it probably is), however, you are ignoring a few key and potentially crucial variables.
1) Raymond Domenech is one of the worst coaches in world soccer today (not taking Karim Benzema when you have Le Sulk Anelka and Handball Henry as your best options?) and is known to be leaving after the WC. How can you expect players to bow to his vag-anal authority in this situation?
2) France is a country which is still (in spite of changing demographics) overwhelmingly white, while this team is overwhelmingly African and Algerian. Now, we are not allowed to talk about identity related motivation here in the U.S. but I assure you having visited France many times that as liberal as they try to be on the outside, race and class are still major issues. What is the real motivation for some of the players on this team from a EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE of patriotism to perform as best they can? In my opinion not very high
Of the other issues you mentioned: the laziness rooted in French minds has more to do with their withdrawal from the imperialist inter-European politics of the last 150 years or so (leaving that mainly to the Germans and Russians and to a lesser extent the English), when they effectively adopted the "side with the stronger" policies that have now got them confused about having to take an active leadership role in world affairs. They see them selves as big swinging dicks by looking to their past, but know that today they are just a bunch of pussies. The France of the 19th and 21st centuries are completely different animals, mon ami.
I'm not French, but if I was I would either throw on a burqa and collect welfare OR clearly take a stand on the development of a junior Ankara in the middle of Paris. They want to have it both ways.
We don't teach our kids philosophy OR economics in U.S. high schools. So they have no clue how to earn an honest buck or at least how to bitch like a proper proleterian.
France is where we're headed...sadly.
My bad, I really thought you were a troll (given the level of details in the other comments I wasn't the only one to think so). I apologize if you're not a troll, I understand that in this case my answer may have been unpolite. It was just a troll reaction. (But yeah, starting a conversation swords drown is funnier and more challenging.) My comment on the football players' strike wasn't supposed to be serious.
It's just that your OP is a bit confusing: you're not precisely making an argument, just mentionning a current political reform after a brief and very personal sum up of recent French history. It's hard to see where you're heading. Thus my troll conclusion. Your last thread concerning GM's IPO is much more inviting to thoughtful consideration.
In your last comment you've forgotten one thing that a French guy could do: get the hell out of this country (if he wants to get rich). But it's true that most governments are putting together the same financial ill-considered reforms or income tax reforms, and most have the same baby boomers elderly problems. So apart from Singapore/Hong Kong I suppose we'll all end up with the same treatments.
