Volunteering?

Does anyone have experience as a volunteer/ mentor for low income or URMs who are navigating HS or college? Finally have some spare time so I’d like to spend some of it giving back. I was fortunate enough to have a mentor who helped me out tremendously and want to pass it forward. Are there any organizations that come to mind? I’ve briefly heard of SEO and Minds Matter but thats about it. Thanks!!

How about a different approach. Try reaching out to finance clubs at community colleges in your area. Reach out to them and offer to come in and discuss what you do as well as other careers in finance. No doubt at that stage you can set them on the right path or at least help them understand what their options are. A lot of these undergrads are going into finance or business without really understading what they can do in finance or business. Despite having the ability to search, on Quant or DuckDuckgo, "careers in finance" they won't be able to make much progress if they can't "connect" with the options, whiich is were you would come in. They'll likely end up in reddit and we all know that all the real industry peeps only use WSO.

You can save some poor soul from going into debt to be an accounant, or at least guide them to those rotational programs at some of the bigger firms so they don't end up RobertWilliams or whatever that staffing firm is called. Think outside of where all the other programs already exist. Think about guiding people towards SEO who might have never heard about it.

Though it may not be so applicable to you, the first one that comes to my mind is the west philly tutoring project I believe. Maybe there is a local organization by you, wherever you are, that does similar work / whatever you want to do. Good luck

Alternatively I think there may be some people like that on this forum who are looking for job/career specific help as they navigate college (and maybe even some HSers too). Maybe you can try to interact and help them here if you see their posts / speak to them. Just an idea and I may be off. Best wishes

Nice of you to think about this. One thing to consider is your changing role in non-profits as you progress in your career. At this point, writing a check to the local soup kitchen is more valuable than scooping the pasta special myself. With mentorship, I think that it's a little different but still something to think about.
