I'll give you a lesson learned - stop worrying about who you think you should be (or worse, what others think you should be) and focus improving the person that you actually are. I can sum up so much anxiety and countless mistakes due to that very simple idea.

Best … mistakes?

yeah, I'm curious where others F-ed up. In my case, it's usually impatience, and moving on before I've reaped the full rewards. That impatience was true in uni, where I could have stayed longer for a second more practical major, or leaving ibanking to go into PE before I was any good at modeling or had a good CV track record, or jumping out and redeeming from PE deals.  One mistake after the other, but all similar at their core deficiency.

Choosing prestige above all else. Early in my career, lateraled from a reputable shop where I liked the team to a much more prestigious group on paper. During the interview I had the gut feeling that I wouldn’t enjoy working with some of the personalities. Muted that inner voice and went for the name. Over time, I grew to realize whom you work for/with matters more than which bank/group/possibly even exit ops. More broadly, career decisions should really be made in the context of personal goals, fit, preferences, long term view of career path etc. rather than what’s immediately visible/offered at hand, such as brand name, comp, group, etc.

Have lots and lots of sex when your're young--it's a confidence booster and you won't be so focused on getting some when you start your career and progress, so you won't be as distracted

Be an owner as soon as possible. Start something. Buy something. Hustle the fuck out of whatever you are trying to do...but be an owner.

Shoot your shot on every 10 you see.

Do a whole lot of shit that makes you uncomfortable as soon as you can.

Climb a mountain. Learn an instrument. Find the hottest chick in every room and get shot down 99 times. Start a company. Join the military.

No one gives a fuck about any path.

1 - Go on a night out with your "friends" and then get in a street fight. Only remain friends with the ones that stayed and fought with you; don't be surprised if that number is zero. People are cowards, including your "friends".

2 - Save for retirement early in your life. Age is the great equalizer and we ALL get old. You're going to want to retire earlier than you think and it will come much faster than you think. Be prepared by starting early.

I got into an altercation outside of Manitoba’s years ago. Some guy went outside and clocked my friend in the face and I was behind the guy and put him in a rear naked choke and then also had to fight off this short guy that eventually ran away from me. My friend never forgot when I backed him up after that. It really meant a lot to him and was a sort of bonding experience. I had some skinned knees somehow but didn’t take any face shots.
