What car do you drive?

I will be starting full-time as an IB associate this summer in a city where I will need a car. I am a car guy and would like to upgrade my car, but don't want to buy something that will make me look pretentious for my role.

What is your current role and what do you drive?

Analyst in NYC but my car back home is an 2015 Infiniti. Probably should sell it, but Tiffani is my baby and idk if I can get rid of her just yet. If I were still back where I could use a car, I was planning on getting an old American classic. I was looking at a nice Chevy El Camino and Buick Riviera before I moved. Dream car is a 1972 DeTomasso Pantera, but theyre like 70k min so that aint happening soon.

Dayman?

I wish I could give you more bananas. The TRD Off Road trim is awesome on the Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner.

The answer is always Miata.  Can you even drive stick bro?

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

Yeah I’d prefer a Lotus Elise over this - it’s like a go kart - really fun to drive.

At that stage, I’d be thinking Camry Or Accord. Maybe a Lexus if I had to have a prestige car.

Get the simplest car that is reliable.  You don’t want to be dealing with issues at all when you’re that busy

If you’re an enthusiast, resist as best you can the urge to buy something showy and hold off buying those cars as long as possible.(I know that advice won’t go over well lol)  They’re a headache and drain financially when you want to be focused on wealth accumulation and your career.

Honda Accord V6.

I'll drive a Porsche one day, but at the moment I have better things to spend my money on.

said it before I'll say it again. 2016 Mazda 3 hatchback, personally and with bias, I think it's the best car on the market in that price range. It's pretty much a mini SUV, except it handles very well and is fun to drive.

Yes, you have good taste and understand cars that are worth it. Long term and short.

The answer is always Miata. 2016 ND GT in candy-apple red. I've got easy access to SUVs and trucks when the need arises, and I took a train from my place to work back when that was a thing.  In my opinion, any guy who can't handle three pedals needs to hand in his man-card.  (Yes this includes my brother in law who's 1.3 liter KTM has twice the HP of my Ducati 900, but can only deal with a hand clutch)

If my mother can handle a manual 1980 Alfa Romeo, you can too.  Don't make me tell you about my blind grandmother who drove a '67 Stingray with four on the floor to the bank for 20 years for her job as a teller.

Either my BIL is on this forum or somebody is insecure about the fact that they can't drive a manual and threw monkey shit at me.

Checking a car and finding out about the vehicle history report by vin before buying means ensuring safety for yourself and your passengers. The safest way is to contact the specialists from the website https://epicvin.com/ , who provide auto check services. No matter how well you know about cars, professionals encounter them every day, and therefore almost intuitively will be able to determine if there is a reason to doubt the words of the seller. This will help you make the right choice and buy a good car that will delight you for many years!

If you’re a true car guy with a limited budget, and not just wanting to show off to compensate for your big shorts, drive a relatively recent enthusiast car: any Miata, any VW GTI, BRZ/FRS/Toyota 86, any E36/E40 BMW, 986 Porsche Boxster, a C5-C6 Corvette, any recent Camaro/Mustang, Subaru WRX, Accord V6. Manual Transmission preferred.

I drive a 2001 Porsche Boxster that I bought for $3500 online including shipping costs and do the repair work on it myself.

Mid 2010's Toyota Avalon.  Not as cramped as the other Toyota sedans, decent features, super cheap if bought used (20K), and easily can get 400K+ miles if you take care of it.  Best value play on the market IMO.

Lots of good suggestions in here but given your price range I think you're going to have be a little more specific in the type of vehicle you're looking for. You could do anything from a used F150 Platinum to a 987 Porsche / C7 'Vette so quite the range of options

You can always get plenty of car and not look pretentious with American muscle. I am an analyst 1 and am looking into getting a grand Cherokee (although a Challenger or charger would suffice) with a hemi, or ideally a 392 if the opportunity presents itself. They are meannnn

Get something like a subaru impreza hatch, mazda3, or other japanese hatches / wagons. Lexus will be tough to beat on reliability and they'll have good used variety all over the US. Other good options for enthusiasts would be Golf Rs, Macans, most Bimmers. E92 M3 is tempting and they sound demonic.

I'm a car guy too and I drive a stick mazda3 sedan on the west coast and a straight piped 5.0 foxbody mustang on the east coast. The Mazda is perfect for trips along the 101 and I just drive the mustang at home. Probably my next car is going to be a practical wagon from BMW, or maybe a Taycan. It makes sense to reward yourself in this industry once you start earning good comp. I'm planning to get a Huracan or 720s down the line. Will probably get shit for it, but they're not dailies and it only makes sense to spend on our hobbies.

Abarth 595 or Alfa Romeo Giula. Classy, sporty, useful and very chic. Chicks dig it too. Very reliable as well. Keeper and daily driver cars that has the performance of a sports car for less than 50k. I want to get a Giula GTS.

Drove into the office one day in a Porsche my parents bought me... got some strange looks, decided to stick with the subway after that

Just get something with good mpg that is reliable for the first couple of years then upgrade to a nice, luxury SUV. Don't focus on sporty until you make enough to splurge on a kitted-out Porsche or Ferrari, trust me it's worth it. But whatever you do throughout your career, never buy and then drive a car nicer than your boss's car to work.
