What really interests you?

So the 2019 goals thread that came up a while ago (https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/what-are-y…) kinda got me wondering, if you could teach yourself to do any one thing, or pick up any hobbie, what would it be? What is something that truly interests you that you really want to pursue?

I for one have always loved drawing as a kid, and I have decided I want to start doing more of that again. If I am able, I would love to teach myself to animate and hopefully make something this year. Idk I would love to tell a good story and just put it all together myself. If I do something that I'm proud of, I'd be excited to share it with all of you here, but don't count on it just yet because you know.... work life balance is kinda ass. It is what it is.

But seriously, what would you all want to learn if you had the time/opportunity? Intentionally left this open ended. I don't care if it's how to be quicker at excel or teach yourself guitar or fuckin build the first faster-than-light spaceship.

I'm pretty good on my hobbies, to be honest. I read, play video games, golf, cook extravagant meals, watch Netflix/HBO prestige series, work out, play rec soccer from time to time, etc.

I used to write a lot of fiction for various websites as a kid and I don't write anymore and I always thought sailing and surfing would be cool to learn if I lived closer to the ocean. I'd probably tackle those.

What do you play? Been itching to find a good game lately.

Writing screenplays and short stories. Always been a hobby of mine and would like to get better and devote more time to it

I can kinda relate. I feel like I've spent enough time watching TV/Movies/playing story-based games where I could probably come up with something decent if I put in the time and surrounded myself with the right people.

Definitely would take up motorsport of some short. Grew up loving cars and racing but sadly these days, owning a car (let alone a sports car) when you live in a major financial hub makes no financial sense so holding off on that for now.

If I took a gap-year or retired early I would love to write a critics or review column of some sorts (food, technology, movies, travel). To be able to professionally hate the world and share my thoughts to a big audience would be a dream come true.

I don't know... Yeah. Almost definitely yes.

Baking Pastry and Bread. I love making sourdough bread from the sourdough that I have been cultivating for months now; kneading bread is also a good alternative to working out. I actually have some of my bread dough fermenting in my apartment so I can bake when I get back from work. The only downside is I often finish baking at 2 am since I get back home at 10 pm and proofing the bread again for baking take around 4 hours. The result is pure joy, I love it.

Fitness. I'm a creature of habit and there's just something about the nature of lifting weights that is mentally relaxing for me. It's an escape away from everything else for a good 90 minutes or so. That coupled with the endless variations of exercises that can be performed and the fact there is always something more to learn between technique, diet and the works.. Just gets and keeps me going.

Other interests include: Snowboarding (shoutout to the storm coming this weekend to tahoe), golf and cooking

Guitars and amps - everything about them. playing, building, buying / selling, you name it. Also playing live music.

When I was 18/19 (had been playing seriously since 12) I tried to live off music, which consisted of playing in different bands / some touring, giving lessons, session work, etc.

It's really tough to make a real living out of that, unless you really "make it" and can demand high rates (studio / teaching). That year I planned to enroll a conservatory (think Berklee), but was put off when I witnessed how the real pro musicians in my network lived. You're always chasing clients, always playing gigs - usually at the worst days and hours imaginable. Often times playing music you can't stand - and there's no career progression, so to speak.

But if I had unlimited funds? Yeah, I'd probably do a 50 / 50 of playing live music and blogging / vlogging / doing a show around guitar equipment.

I am positive I can make it to the big leagues MLB if I played baseball.

So i'll give that a try while I am still young. I have not played since I was 7, but I was obliviously the best player in the league at the time. I quit playing because it seemed so boring to me. Now I am realizing that I will be payed $950,000+ a year to hit some balls around and date lingerie models.

I will put a little effort into it.

So I will take up baseball this summer and will try out or for some local leagues and get recruited within 2-3 years to play pro ball.

I travel probably 4-5 weeks a year for pleasure and every trip involves either scuba diving, skiing/boarding or something else adventurous for part of it. If I had more time I’d love to be a master diver, visit more amazing places etc.

So much to see, so little time. Really thankful lately I’ve been making the time to pursue these activities though.

I couldn't agree more on this. I came to a stunning realization that I haven't truly "created" something in so long (not counting excel models or ppts lol) so that is kinda what makes me make to do something of my own.

"BankSouth32" Woodworking - designing and building detailed furniture. Love the idea of creating something with my hands from start to finish.

Yeah I’m working on a few things this month.

I really want to build a large bookcase (about 14ft tall) with a ladder and shit.

Maybe similar to this. Not a huge ladder, just to get to the top books. I have a lot of books.

Very nice looking. If you want it to have a ladder would probably need to be a built-in but could potentially be standalone so you could always take it with you when you move. Something to think about.

In no particular order: Fitness - I workout 4-5 times a week now and am in ok shape (mostly injuries holding me back at this point), but I'd love to take it more seriously. Cooking - I'm pretty decent at what I generally make, but I'd love to expand my skillset. Also, with more time I'd love to put a healthy dinner on the table for my boys every day. Aviation - for about 5 years now I've had it in the back of my mind to get my pilots license. Time (kids) and the fact that I'd be unlikely to use it much (kids) have held me back Travel Scuba - for when traveling Surfing - I'd like to give it a shot, but dont think it would become a long term hobby for me. Investing - I'd really like to become a more knowledgeable investor - especially when it comes to finding value in mid and small cap stocks

don't try surfing if you don't want to become addicted. it's the best/worst thing in the world. the best because of the sheer bliss riding waves gets you, the worst because of the time and luck it requires. I'm at the beach most weekends, but unlike most everything else in the world, you can't just go out and get a wave (unless you're in lemoore CA or waco TX). conditions, tides, wind, swell direction all have to line up. but I will say this: once you catch a really good wave, you're hooked forever. I've been hooked ever since I could drive myself to the beach, and it's the main reason I'm considering a long term move to the coast, so I can manage money and surf in the same day.
