What to do with more free time
Hey monkeys, finally managed to exit banking to a gig with much more chill hours. Have dreamed of a role that would let me plan week night dinners / dates & uninterrupted gym time.
Would love to hear any hobbies / skills / pass times people have picked up after gaining some time / freedom back post IB / PE etc.
I garden, lift weights, listen to podcasts, cook, travel, head down to the beach to read the occasional book, and play the occasional video game. All pretty standard stuff I think outside of growing plants.
The key is to do things you find interesting though. Think of something that looks cool, go down a YouTube rabbit hole learning everything there is to learn about it, and enjoy your time learning and having fun.
I truly believe everyone needs to workout (weights + cardio). It's not rocket science to see that the healthier you are the better mental state you are in. Plus having a workout backbone allows you to handle stressful situations much better. No shame to people who don't want to workout, do whatever makes you happy. But I literally went on my first jog since starting my job and I felt so relaxed afterwards.
I feel like the options for working out are endless too. Bodybuilding, power lifting, classes, running, swimming, cycling, martial arts, rec sports, etc. There’s something out there for everyone.
If you don't mind me asking, did you go to another banking gig? Or exit the industry into something else?
Nope, wasn’t passionate about the job and couldn’t deal with lack of wlb. Exited to a startup!
Ah, Nice. I'm assuming something with corp/biz dev...
Triathlon, MMA (Muay Thai + BJJ), Tournament poker
These will take up all your free time. YW.
1) Spend more time with your SO. Married, dating, single but looking? Its a great opportunity to increase the amount of time with your favorite person. Dinner every / most nights if youre in a serious relationship. More week night dates if youre just playing the field
2) Health and wellness. Not sure how old you are, but it is important to realize that your income doesnt predict your life expectancy, but your diet, exercise and stress levels have a direct correlation. Get back into good shape, start to eat right / better, and try to manage stress as appropriate.
3) Double down on your hobbies. Hot take but stop trying to use all your time productively. I started playing old video games I hadnt played since I was a kid. I started to read a lot more. Revert back to anything that brings you joy.
Lift and starve myself on chicken and broccoli to look hot
