An intern during their first banking internship at a middle-market firm was given a project that all interns were meant to complete by the end of the summer with help from analysts and other team members. However, this intern faced a lack of support due to being the only visible minority on the team. Despite the initial cold shoulder from analysts and associates, the intern managed to save an analyst's reputation one night by completing tasks the analyst had forgotten. This act of initiative warmed the analyst to the intern, who then received the needed guidance on the project.
Unfortunately, an associate misconstrued the intern's collaboration with the analyst as not doing their own work and reported this to the managing director, leading to a very uncomfortable situation for the intern. Despite this, the intern completed the project, performed well in the final presentation, and received an offer but chose not to return to the firm.
