Who Has Relocated to Another Country For Work?

Who is willing to share experiences?

  1. What age and why?

  2. From where to where?

  3. Did you know the language?

  4. How did you even find the job and land the job?

  5. Drawbacks and benefits of picking up and relocating?

  6. Has it become a permanent move?

Grew up in India. Moved to the US in Minnesota when I was 18 for undergrad. After undergrad, moved to London. Spent 3 years there. Moved to Chicago for my MBA (Kellogg). Worked one year in Chicago. Now I’m in toronto. I’m an Indian by birth and name but I’m a man of the world by moral and intellect. No drawbacks other than the friends you miss - it’s incredibly easy for me to gel into my surroundings

That is a fantastic journey. I'd be really interested in your thoughts on each location/culture/work culture, etc.

I moved from Sydney Australia to New Orleans when I was 37. It wasn't for work originally it was for a 6 month vacation after I sold out of business. My family loved it so much we wanted to live here so I started a business so I could get a Business Investment Visa (E2)

  • 22 years old, wanted to work abroad after studying abroad
  • USA -> East Asia
  • Beginner level
  • Networking
  • Drawbacks: made steep learning curve even steeper with language barrier at first, harder to transition home later on in general, most people don't value the experience as much as I do
  • Benefits: language, culture, broadening horizons; would not do anything different if I had a time machine
