It's a pretty easy and relatable way to teach people how to think about making good OpEx vs CapEx decisions.
Trade-offs, amortization, depreciation, recurring expense, etc... Lot of important concepts all in there. It's pretty efficient.
Also at the very least in 5 years time, the Rolex could have some residual sale value while the Starbucks is spent and gone.
Subconsciously it is at least a way to save/invest some small amount of money compared to just spending it all today and leaving nothing tangible for the future.
