Why does WSO delete entire threads instead of just the shitty comments in them?

I've seen several threads where a controversial topic gets discussed and there're some thoughtful comments from both "sides" of a given issue that get good engagement (if bananas and shit tossing are anything to go by). Then a handful of trolling morons come in commenting random bs which derails from the original post and get the whole thing thrown out.

Why delete the whole thread? If the comments from those users are bad enough to do that, would it not make sense to delete the comments themselves or suspend those users? Is that just not a capability WSO has from a coding standpoint (no idea how this place works on the back-end) so the only option is to delete the thread? Seems heavy-handed.

They do remove comments but the bar is very high to get comments removed.  It is probably just easier for them to take down a topic.  Instead of removing comments, I would suggest they ban trolling morons based on IP addresses.  This is like only website in which I participate in which trolling morons are a problem. I have to wonder what attracts these morons to WSOIt must be because you practically have to be a terrorist to get banned here.  The bar to get banned is ridiculously high, so the trolling will continue.  Every other place I participate has a pretty low tolerance for acting like an asshole or trolling.
