Why the fuck do people say shit like "long time no talk! hows life?" and you respond and then they dont respond again? wtf

i've noticed something happening quite prevalent on my facebook and others' facebooks.

like 4 weeks ago a friend from college I haven't spoken to in years wrote on my wall "hey [name redacted]!! just wanted to catch up man! long time no talk! hows life??"

and i responded (WITHIN 24 HRS) with "woah man, it's been way too long! haha i still remember doing [event redacted] with you way back in 2007! i've been good man. living in NY. what have you been up to these days? hows life? we should DEFINITELY catch up!"

and then 4 weeks later today, he still hasn't responded. honestly i dont care if he responds or not but what intrigues me if WHY people even initiate and WASTE THEIR PRECIOUS TIME writing stuff like this only to not follow through? I mean, I figure if you write on someone's wall regarding "hows life??" you seek to open a line of conversation with that person, yes? So then why waste your time if you aren't going to pursue such a conversation?

and i see on some of my friends' walls, posts from their friends from like september 2nd, and it says "hey! how have you been? update me on life!" to which they responded "ive been great! just applying to internships and stuff. hows life with you?" and then the original convo-starter doesn't respond for months!

i dont care if someone doesn't respond or not, but WHY even start the convo in the first place if you're not going to continue the conversation? what goes through people's heads when they do this? sorry but some things people do in life has me banging my head on my keyboard and im going to get to the bottom of this shit.

you fail to see the point of my question. my question is, why do people even waste 2 minutes starting a conversation if they don't intend to continue said conversation? for me, everything i do has a purpose, a beginning and an end. i dont waste time, ever, starting convos with people i dont intend to continue talking to. just wanted to know what goes through other people's heads

i do get your point.....i also get the same messages out of blue putting a moral obligation upon me to fill them with what i did from the point we last interacted ....

these bored souls who have had their fill of stalking random girls on FB will in a rush of adrenaline shoot across these convos to 4-5 ppl without even meaning to follow up or just that once we reply after a gap they usually lose thier interest and carry this spiral forward....

yes, its stupid, pointless and dumb but then not every1 of us has a purpose, a beginning and an end...and for those who dont just be happy they will bother you only on fb and not in real life....

I agree with the OP. That is a pretty big pet peeve of mine, even though it doesn't really happen often to me.

They're short of posts on their wall.

Also, when you get a friend request... you accept it and post a friendly "hi, thanks for the add...how are you?" and they don't reply back. Why the fuck did you add me?

I know exactly what you are talking about. When you have your Facebook filled with losers from high school and college, they tent to get particularly interested in your life. There are two ways of looking at this though, particularly your situation.

From his point of view, he's fishing for information. Such as where you work, what you do etc. At the end of the day, does it benefit him? That's probably the end goal.

The best part is, if you don't actually provide anything worthwhile and he ignores you, then you go into wso and write articles like this. Thus, he indirectly came into control, a sort of power play.

Because people are curious to the point of being nosy. Trying to size you up now vs when they last saw you and see how your life has progressed vs theirs. Why the hell else do we have high school reunions? It's not like you're friends with the majority of people that go to those things.

People tend to think life is a race with other people. They don't realize that every moment they spend sprinting towards the finish line is a moment they lose permanently, and a moment closer to their death.

Your comments mirror my experience and concerns exactly on Facebook. I have decided not to take anything on Facebook too seriously as many of my friends are rather inept at using it well. It is also a way for some non-friends to passively abuse you if that is their thing. Also, even though I read up on how to use FB effectively I often find I am using it incorrectly especially the privacy settings. Not to mention the regular changes to function and format on FB (confusing for most). Most people use FB for light amusement and social bantering with true friends and family and so if it gets too difficult with ’acquaintances’ there is a tendency of avoidance (my personal experience). If the behaviour of certain FB friends is annoying you can choose to ignore it or even 'unfriend' them at your discretion. People will make fun of you for having this concern...they are likely the biggest offenders when it comes to what would seem appropriate behaviour. Take note, their social skills in real life are likely not that great either. Also I have found friends that are on FB but act as though they are too cool for it...they are trolls, stocking their friends but for negative reasons (unfriend). We all know a few people like that. The fact is I had certain friends who would never, ever respond to me on FB and I experience this to be a direct snub...I 'unfriended' them because it occurred to me they are not a friend after all. If they exhibit behaviour that you would not do even to someone you don't particularly like then you decide if you consider this person a friend and if it bugs you...get rid of them. After all it is your FB page and it is supposed to be enjoyable. Just some food for thought.
