WSO Conference 2013: Panel Topic Suggestions

We are in the midst of recruiting talented panelists and speakers for WSO Con 2013. With that in mind, I am hoping all of you can send us ideas of Panel Topics and/or themes you'd like to see this year as well as ideas for a Keynote Speaker. The structure of the conference will now include 1 keynote, 2 workshops and 3 panels in the following order:

[keynote], lunch, [panel 1], [workshop 1: Resume Best Practices], [panel 2], [workshop 2: Interview Best Practices], [panel 3], [closing remarks]...

SOOOO, if you have any suggestions we'd love to hear them. We want to make this event even better than last year with more interaction with the attendees, more time to have networking breakout sessions (workshops will give some space in between panels), etc. Get your earlybirds while they are still available :-) ...more details below:

The 2013 WSO Conference will take place Saturday June 29th at Hotel Penn (401 7th Ave) in their fancier (and larger) Penn Top Ballroom.

Definitely an important panel topic for discussion: The current state of the industry. Also, really enjoyed Patrick's personal story at the first conference; maybe expand on that and include some Real Life WSO Success Stories?

+1 on a "current state of the industry" panel. Some extra ideas for it:

  • A discussion on what it takes to personally succeed at different levels of the industry (BBs, MMs, etc)

  • The role of securities research given the continued computerization of the industry

Excellent idea, In The Flesh!

hockey1316You want to throw in a consulting discussion or is that too polarizing and you want more general ?

Was thinking of making the 3rd panel a overview of Other paths related to finance other than IB, like Corp Fin, Management Consulting, HFs, etc...

thoughts?

That could work too, but I think it's better to briefly address all of those at a high level at the beginning of the show, rather than just assume everyone's after investment banking. That way everybody has something to work with/think about when they start at the conference. They can decide who they want to talk to, what to ask about, etc.

I personally think this is a great idea. WSO seems to be one of the primary resources for Management Consulting and I think it would be a great topic to cover at the Conference. I don't think there is anything similar for consultants? You might attract a different crowd too.

I enjoyed the last conference and panels, but I know I would benefit greatly from a panel with some other options, especially Corp. Finance and Consulting.

troposHow about a woman in finance panel?

With all the guys in the crowd it would probably turn into a sexual harassment workshop.

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

I doubt it.

There are always questions on WSO about what to wear (appropriate shoes, suit/shirt colors, and the like). Maybe have an expert talk about that?
