WSO Happy Hour Recap: NYC, Fall 2015

Thanks to all who came out this past Wednesday night for a fun evening of drinks and conversation (both professional and personal) for the first happy hour of the fall 2015 season. It's the time when all the major sports are going full swing, the weather is cooling off from the horrendous 95-degree, humid, hot garbage stench of New York, and Oktoberfest and pumpkin ales are in season and at their most delicious. The Galway Hooker pub had just recently added Bronx Pale Ale on tap, which is a delicious amber ale that makes for smooth, easy drinking at this or any other time of year.

I've hosted dozens of these events and I have to say, this one had some of the most interesting people I've ever met here.

We had a couple of new regulars in attendance, including @Skinnayyy" . Once you've been here at least twice, you're a Happy Hour regular. Wear it with pride. Hope you enjoyed yourself and that the results of your MBA accounting exam are in your favor!

I also chatted with a repeat visitor who currently goes to my alma mater--I may or may not have pissed her off the first time by verbally dumping on the school, but I can do that because I went there and know what I'm talking about. Either way, she obviously didn't mind because between now and then, she had finished a superday interview for a major investment bank and was only waiting for the reply.

If this bank is doing a serious, honest interview evaluation, that reply should be "When can you start?" She has a military background too, if that matters. @Flake" I believe you know exactly who I'm referring to.

Another interesting thing about Happy Hours for me personally is that I always meet at least one other heavy metal fan. Like clockwork, we'll be talking shop about work to start off before the conversation shifts to our hobbies and--voila!--we're talking about Blind Guardian, Pantera, and Pentagram.

Not that I expect anyone to show up to happy hour wearing a band shirt and leather jacket, but this fellow headbanger couldn't have dressed it up any better: works for a well-regarded private equity firm, lived in Japan for a few months, does not drink alcohol, and is a practicing Mormon...who knows heavy metal just as well as I do, if not better. My hat's off to him for chatting with everybody present and just being an all-around great asset to the event. Needless to say, he's welcome back anytime.

It was on a Wednesday night, so we got out of there before 11pm. And although it was a small group (about fifteen people or so), I think you guys are really starting to get it. Come by, order a drink, shake someone's hand and say hello. Ask how work was, ask if they're thirsty, and what they like to do outside the office. It all happened very naturally, and I think everyone got to speak with everyone else. Very, very good and social group here on this Wednesday night in October.

If you've always wondered about going to happy hour but are intimidated, GO. Even if you poke your head into what you THINK may be the WSO room and see only a couple people standing around, don't be shy! We'd love to have you.
