WSO Weekly Wrap-Up (9/26-10/2)
In case you missed them, here're some of last week's most popular topics:
OCR: The Saga Continues (Alternate Title: I Now Have Cancer of the Nose)
Post By @KREBSCYCLEOMG"
All schools are apparently filled with tweedledees and tweedle dums because all of the atrocities that led me to write this post. I'm also starting to think that smarter kids are even dumber than their friends at the lesser ivies because the shit I saw and heard (and smelled) was just plain carcinogenic.
How Finance is like Professional Sports
Post By @MBAGrad2015"
A lot of WSO posters have been complaining about the proliferation of college and even high school kids on the site. Initially, I shared their frustration. However, I realized that it makes perfect sense for these youngsters to ask for advice. That's because the finance game, much like pro sports, starts EARLY. To get the coveted jobs, the preparation starts earlier now than ever before.
"DANGER AHEAD" - Icahn's New Video about QE and Junk Bonds
Post By @BEAST MODE TRADER"
I think right now, we are in the early stages of a bear market. Generals are retreating, bio-tech getting crushed recently with tech. IMO S&P sees 1750 before 2000 again. I liked the video, Icahn's a beast (link inside the post)
Putting a Price Tag on Scandal: Sturm und Drang at Volkswagen!
Post By @Aswath Damodaran"
This may be a reflection on my moral compass, but I find it difficult to muster the outrage that some people seem to feel about Volkswagen's deception. I think that the company's acts were stupid, short-sighted and greed-driven, but there have been far more appalling acts in corporate history that are more deserving of my outrage. Volkswagen should be punished and the market has already meted out a hefty penalty, but looking at the possible costs of this scandal, I think that the market has over-reacted.
WSJ: The ‘Wage Gap’ Myth That Won’t Die
Post By @MBA_Junkie"
I have yet to see a case in my own life when someone, especially a woman, was discriminated against because of her gender. Therefore, this article makes sense to me. What have your experiences been?
You have $100k
Post By @cre123"
You have $100k in your checking account for whatever reason. What do you do? Me? Probably 25% REIT, 25% CD, 25% SXP (S&P 500 Index), 25% money market.
Would anyone here lever up to $500k and buy some sort of real estate? Buy something cash flow producing?
[ISSUE 37] - Interesting Things...
Post By @Adventure_Capitalist"
If Valeant's "buy and burn" strategy isn't illegal, it is certainly offensive. Congress should press on with its investigation of Valeant and other companies in the industry. Depending upon its findings, Medicare, Medicaid, and American consumers might consider boycotting Valeant's products. At some point, the drug industry needs to know that consumers will no longer support companies that overcharge simply because they can.
