I got into Yerba Mate in Buenos Aires and used to drink it in college at my desk out of the gourd with that metal straw that filters the mate. People thought it extremely odd, but I liked to drink it when I was studying.

I still drink it now, but they have tea packets that are decent in a lot of stores. It used to be hard to get and I would have to order it online.

I used to mainly get Canarias and Nobleza Gaucha.

I drink coffee, green tea, yerba mate, runa, white, black, oolong, and a bunch of other teas. Real deal? What sensationalist shit is this? It's just another caffeinated tea, dude. It has 3 different stimulants actually. No, you don't need to drink it from the stupid straw. Just get it on Amazon. I got my last kilo at a liquor store.

Dude China makes so many awesome teas, but I actively avoid anything from there because of how polluted it's gotten. Pretty much all their produce tests positive for mercury or lead. I won't even buy ginger from China at the grocery store. With that said, my favorite tea I've ever had is Lapsang souchong. It's black tea smoked over pine needles. It almost tastes like whiskey.

"GoldenCinderblock" No, you don't need to drink it from the stupid straw.

I don't drink it from the straw anymore, but when I did it brought back much nostalgia from moments in South America.

Because, mate in South America isn't just a drink, it is a moment you share with other people. Similar to coffee in the US, but there you actually share the same straw with other people, maybe 8 people around you, like a joint, so if you're all literally sharing the same item with your lips, it is an intimate moment, one not to be taken lightly.

I was invited to have 'mate' with some locals in Buenos Aires, and it was a big deal for them actually. I didn't realize what was going on at first and they were a bit hesitant as I was sort of confused that we were all having the same cup and I said that I wanted my own cup. I said it in such a way that it misconstrued what I meant and I accidentally disrespected everyone in the group, but my friend caught what I meant and started laughing and explained to them that I wasn't familiar with the 'mate' custom and he explained to me carefully that this was tradition.

To add to this, the gourd we were using looked like it had come from the 1970s and possibly tied to a car for a decade and then taken off. It looked brutal.

But, it is tradition. And to enjoy a beverage in the proper spirit of the tradition carries on the culture and enriches the moment. I mean why do people drink beer out of a boot?

Because, 'das boot!'.

Remember though always turn at the end so you don't get the infamous boot bubble splash.
