Not married to the number 5, but I definitely agree that everyone you spend time with shapes your personality, probably somewhat proportionally to the amount of time you spend with them.
I’ve been around my family mostly and yet I am very different from all of them.
Facts, many of my behaviors are reactionary and intentionally opposite of what my family does.
I agree- I also think that if you spend a decent amount of time in online communities (wso, subgroups of twitter, subreddits, etc.) then you'll be influenced by that as well

I don’t know, I’m around some pretty sharp guys but we’re all good at different things. I would agree we take on the characteristics of our peers. You’d have to be Stephen Dedalus not to.

I think there's some truth to it. Living with roommates who were nuts made me do some questionable actions that I wouldn't have done otherwise. Now I recently made like 5 BFFs who are all trying to improve their appearance, and I've been hitting the gym ever since.
I think that it's more of a framing mechanism. I was a mediocre high school student but my best high school friends (7 people) are now LITERALLY all PHDs, doctors, and lawyers. I'm just a lowly banker but I think that if I wasn't seeing them consistently excel, I'd likely be selling cars.

I think this highlights how important it is to pick Mr. Right or Mrs. Right. You will literally spend most of your time with them, so pick wisely.
