Who is Your Favorite Athlete?

My favorite athlete is probably Coleen Quigley. We both ran the 2018 NYC 5th Avenue mile and she beat me by almost a minute. I started following her on Instagram a couple years ago and she always likes and responds to my comments. She recently did her first triathlon too so there was much discussion about her event and challenges. Here are her stats - who is your favorite athlete?

Bowerman Track Club: 2015 - 2021

Charles Leclerc

No offense, but do you not know who Senna was? Or Verstappen or Ricciardo? Switching gears a bit (no pun intended), this guy named Collin McRae and his buddy Carlos Sainz? Switching again, Jamie Whincup, Jamie Winterbottom? I mean I wish Leclerc does good things, and he seems to be on track (again, not a pun), but he hasn't gotten there yet in my eyes.

  • Don Alfonso Antonio Vicente Eduardo Angel Blas Francisco de Borja Cabeza de Vaca y Leighton, 11th Marquess of Portago (1928-1957) -- Spanish aristocrat and racing driver. Gone too soon at the Mille Miglia in 1957. Linda Christian always remembered him with fondness, as will his fans.
  • Niki Lauda (1949-2019) -- no introduction necessary. Looked death straight in the eye and still came out on top. I like to think a bit of magic happened on that fateful day in '76.
  • Don Alfonso Jaime Marcelino Manuel Víctor María de Borbón y Dampierre, Duke of Anjou and Cádiz (1936-1989) -- member of the royal House of Bourbon-Anjou, possible heir to the throne of Spain after Franco's (his wife's grandfather) death, president of the Spanish Skiing Federation (1977-1984), and president of the Spanish Olympic Committee (1984-1987). The manner of his death remains a point of much sadness for people like myself; as the senior heir of Louis XIV, King of France, it was considered fitting to some that, like his ancestors, he was beheaded. (Not by guillotine, but by a cable at the Beaver Creek Resort.)

IMO, the most aesthetically pleasing tennis player. The way Federer played was like poetry. The absurdity of some of his forehands in his prime are insane to think about especially if you've played the sport before. His rackets are also very fun to play with if you're an intermediate level player. Growing up, Safin is a close second for me in terms of having a very aesthetically pleasing game to watch.

My favorite tennis player was pretty much Federer's bitch - Andy Roddick.

Gotta be KD. Dude has faced criticism his entire career (albeit some of it was warranted), rumors of a pornstar co-parent, and even just for his hair. The guy doesn't give a fuck he just plays ball. A slump night for him is 25 points.

In ten years he'll be every kid's favorite player's favorite player. I truly believe there's not a guy dead or alive that could beat him 1-on-1.

How is he going to be every kid's favorite basketball player in 10 years.  He will likely be retired for about 5 years by then. I think a kid's favorite would more likely be a guy who is still playing.

Two of my all time favorites were Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. My parents started me off in tennis when I was 3-4 years old, and these two always inspired me. Roger's sportsmanship and Rafael's cockiness had a large impact on me when I was young.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal

Currently, I am a big fan of Hubert Hurkacz, partially because he is a very good tennis player, but also because his playing style is similar to how I played before I injured my shoulder. I am a bit biased in his favor however, given that he is the first Polish national to reach the ATP top 10 ranking, and I also am Polish.

Hubert Hurkacz

Has to be Rafael Nadal. This man never gives up and is a role-model for everyone. He might not be as talented as Federer or Djokovic but his determination alone propelled himself above the other two. Whenever I face adversity or need motivation, I look to Nadal for inspiration. He is the GOAT of all sports for me.

From today's sports athletes, I would say Joel Embiid, Patrick Mahomes and Pete Alonso.

Embiid might just be the greatest big ever to play basketball.  He has the highest points per minute in the history of the NBA and yes, he is even ahead of Michael Jordan  Mahomes is the most talented QB I have seen play.  He is certainly the all time best qb through his age.  Peter Alonso from the Mets will not likely be the best of all time, but he is super fun to watch hit a baseball.

Most Helpful

Will list from different sports and why

Soccer - Kylian Mbappe/Achraf Hakimi, not a PSG fan but Hakimi undoubtedly the best rightback/fullback in world football and was the only one who was able to contain Mbappe in the world cup. Mbappe just showed how good he is and I think France will win 2 of the next three world cups minimum with him leading the way as the most likely new captain.

Cricket - little less known here because this is mostly an American sub, but Virat Kohli and Shaheen Shah Afridi. Virat Kohli is essentially the cricket version of Lebron. One of the most skilled players of all time with still a few years to go. Shaheen is only 21 years old but is the most feared bowler (pitcher) on the planet and has been around for the last 3-4 years now (also insane). Assuming he does not get hurt, he will go down as the greatest bowler to play the game/top three player all time.

Hockey - Alex and Sidney, need I say more.

Football - Mahomes, my guy is going to be up there with Brady by the time his career is over.

Baseball - Alonso and Shohei, Alonso is going to be a Met for life and will likely have a fringe HoF career if he can keep it up. Shohei is just amazing at what he does.

Basketball - Super high on Wembayama.

Tennis - Carlos is going to break all the records set by DJokivic, Nadal, and Federer.

You my friend are a denier if you believe so.

On Shaheen, I am not even Pakistani. This man is 22 years old and is the most feared bowler on the planet. Not to mention he already has about 200 international wickets. Easily has another 8-10 years left at his current level. So long as he does not get hurt, man will be there.

Virat still has probably another 3-4 years to go at the international level. No one will ever get to Sachin's mark for runs because of all the T20 cricket played now (IPL, BBL etc.) and international cricket is getting less and less important. But Virat is undoubtedly the best batsman of the last fifteen years or so.

Former Men's 1.5k / 3k World Record Holder Bernard Lagat.

We used to live on the same street (his house was wayy nicer). I'd be doing whatever on a Saturday morning, and see him just fuckin STEAMIN down the street like some shirtless Kenyan blur.

Didn't know it was him at the time, though.

I didn't know until I was at a Safeway after a run one night buying milk and shit and got (cut?) in front of him in the checkout line. I noticed that we were both buying the same kind of milk (Fairlife Chocolate is the fuckin TRUTH). I looked at him and was like "MILK BROTHERS!" and did the thing where I point at myself and then at him in rapid succession and he looked at me for a second like he thought he was about to be attacked. Then he just closed his eyes and shook his head as a polite way of avoiding whatever weird ass conversation was about to ensue.

Anyway, I get outside and see his Mercedes S-class parked in the fire lane and his licence plate says "Mens 3k" or some shit and it dawns on me that my Fidel-cap wearing Milk Brother was the one and only Bernard Lagat.

You really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and tell lies?

All tied for 1st: Tiger Woods, Tom Brady, LeBron James, Kelly Slater, Shaun White, and Travis Rice

I met Kelly Slater in 2006 when he was surfing the Billabong Pro in South Africa. I didn't really talk to him, but just got a picture with him when he was jamming out on the guitar in a random bar in Jeffrey's Bay. Gisele was there with him too at the time.
