The Accursed Kings by Maurice Druon. It's about the Capet dynasty and was one of the inspirations George RR Martin cited for Game of Thrones. Too bad I can't read them in the original french.

Titan by Ron Chernow.

Literally anything by William T. Vollmann. I've only read his fiction but want to get into some of the non-fiction as well. He writes massive books, so if you're into that, not much better out there. Would recommend starting with Europe Central it's his "easiest book" to get into. From there you can read his debut novel You Bright and Risen Angles or jump into his Seven Dreams series (which I recommended on another thread.) Fairly difficult to read but one of the best writers out there right now.

Notes From the Underground and Crime and Punishment. Still have about half of C&P left to get through but it's great. Looking forward to reading Brothers Karamazov and his other works as well. Trying to get into Russian literature more. If anyone has any recs would love to hear them.

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. With this, I would also read Spy for God, it's a true story about a devout Christen SS officer named Kurt Gerstein. He joined the SS in order to sabotage them where he could in order to delay the killings of Jews in the camps. It's tragic how no one helps him to try and stop what's going on. He is captured by the Allies who do not believe his story and kills himself before going on trial for war crimes.

Would also read Gulag Archipelago by Solzhenitsyn and the Raping of Nanking by Iris Chang. There have been disputes about some of the numbers cited in Gulag but I don't think it takes away from how powerful it is and Solzhenitsyn's message.

Have read a few RE/Finance books over the past year but I don't think they were all that special and most have probably read them already.

For those of you who are into sci-fi/fantasy, Give Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy a try. They're not small books but I breezed through the whole thing in about a month. Great story and fun characters. One the best writers in the genre right now. Obviously, have to recommend A Song of Ice and Fire. The books won't let you down as the show did. Guy Gavriel Kay's work needs more recognition. Tigana and Lions of Al-Rassan are both amazing. Plus, they're standalone so you don't have to commit to a series.

The Brothers Karamazov might be the best book I’ve ever read. It’s far denser than Crime and Punishment and Notes from Underground but it’s like a sort of synthesis of all of his previous works, combing the themes from each of his other major books into a more stark and mature form. There’s clear elements of Notes, C&P, Demons, and The Prince, and others, but it also critiques topics that Dostoevsky only briefly mentioned before like justice (that might be covered in The House of the Dead but I never read it) and rationality. Gogol’s The Overcoat is also a really good short story but it seems kind of odd and simple at first.

Big fan of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. His personal journal, it’s easy to pick up and read a few passages if I’m feeling stressed at work.

The God Equation by Michio Kaku. Short read, but my favorite science book I’ve ever read. If you’re into space/physics at all you’ll love it.

Sapiens by Yuval Harari is a great narrative of humanity’s development from when we emerged from Africa to today. Traces back the major developments in human progress through the ages.
