New to WSO. I noticed there is not much chatter on the Family Office marketplace. I work with a group that is focused on making direct investments in operating companies funded directly by family offices (off of their balance sheet), rather than through a private equity fund structure. Curious to know what the community thinks about this model and if any of you monkeys are interviewing with firms in the space.

Hi All,
Can anyone who has experience or know people who work at a Family Office comment on whether their is mobility to hedge funds, provided the family office does direct investing.
I currently have a job in Big 4 Valuation but was given the opportunity to be a Jr. Analyst as a family office, where 30% of my time is spent on admin/family office/estate planning assistance and 70% spent on investing within direct equities, private companies, and yield driven strategies like BDCs and floating rate funds. Any opinion on whether it's a solid step into a hedge fund career - or trying to move to a BB bank ER or wait for a HF opp is a smarter move?

One of my co-workers at a small hedge fund I used to work at started out of undergrad in a family office. If you'll be helping with investment origination and analyzing different opportunities, the experience can directly transfer to hedge funds. Granted it might be a good idea to get your MBA before attempting to break into hedge funds, there are definitely opportunities to make the transition.
