Got an Offer From an Insurance/Investment Firm for an Investment Client Services Role

Howdy,

I got a "client services" offer from a very established company that is primarily an insurance firm, but has had success in their investment products/services as well. My (very long-term) goal is to be a portfolio manager, and I know I will have to network a lot no matter what role I get in, but for now I am happy to have an opportunity to get my foot in the door. I know that this role will bring me a lot of soft-skill experiences... communication, management, etc.. but my concern is getting on the right path to becoming a portfolio manager, which I know requires a lot of technical analysis and experience.

So my question is, in your professional experience, will a client services role set you on the right path to become a portfolio manager (or valuations analyst, or something similar, etc), or would I be wasting my time?

Obviously I know I wouldn't just move from client services to portfolio manager, and that I'll likely have to make a lateral move or two to really get on that path. I also understand anything is possible with access to the right connections, but for now I'm simply trying to gauge the value of this role and manage my expectations as well.
