GS Executive Office - Interview with HK division

Have an interview upcoming with this division in HK. Responsibilities are:

— Strategic assessment of existing business franchises and competitive positioning;
— Evaluating and incubating new business opportunities;
— Executing acquisition, divestiture, greenfield build-out and joint venture transactions on behalf of the firm;
— Coordinating and developing content for key internal and external events for senior management in Asia Pacific

Can anyone provide tips? I am one year out of undergrad and working in Shanghai, China (but am Chinese-American). They surprisingly got back to me less than a week after I applied online.

it's a small team interfacing with lots of senior people across the various businesses/divisions at GS so fit is a huge part of the interview. they want to confirm that you are a strong, efficient communicator that feels comfortable interacting w/senior people and can exercise discretion.

beyond communication/presentation skills, you must also know how to model and ideally have some experience working on transactions.

hopefully that's helpful.

basically, you should feel comfortable building models and will likely have to point to examples of times that you built models for real-world purposes (e.g., as part of a transaction). people I know that have been in this role or similar roles frequently come from an IBD background though it's not necessarily a requirement--it's just that these folks can easily demonstrate a modeling background.

basically, if you are in a situation that in the interview you say you're a little familiar w/modeling but can pick-up the stuff you don't know then you're climbing an uphill battle for this role.
