Likelihood of a Big 4 internship

Hello all,

I am 18 yrs old and about to head to the University of Texas as a freshman in just about 20 days. I am in their McCombs School of Business and while I am undeclared as of now, I plan on majoring in accounting and minoring in finance.

I am technically entering as a sophomore (due to credit from AP Exams) and will be taking my introductory accounting classes this year. I also had an internship this summer working for Time Warner Cable for 8 weeks.

I am very interested in working for one of the Big 4 in the future and I really want an internship with one of them. How likely is it that a rising 2nd year student will be able to get an internship with a Big 4 during the summer? And if there is any chance, how should I go about getting one?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

Get a 3.5+ GPA. Get involved with student groups (accounting-related is a plus, business honors will likely look good, too, just make sure it's a group where you can actually do something). Reach out to alumni in the Big 4.

And you'll be golden.

Internship after your first year (soph year for you in this case) is not likely b/c they pretty much only take on Juniors and in some cases only Seniors(due to the 150 credit hour rule and most students staying the extra 5th year) for summer internships. They essentially want you to intern a year before you start working for them full time. They do have summer leadership programs for younger students. Being that you are going to McCombs, you should not sell yourself short and accept the fate of audit as your career. You can def swing something way better coming from McCombs. if you are dead set on Big4, look into their TAS/TS and Corporate Finance groups if you are interested in positions more on the finance end of things.

Talk to your profesors/career counselors. They will likely reach out, and given that you go to McCombs you should be able to get whatever you want (given your GPA is decent).

Also, keep your mind open. You may find you're interested in investment banking, trading, consulting, or something else. The formula for getting a job in anyone of these industries is simple (at least from UT Austin):

1) High GPA + finance or accounting major 2) Involvement on campus 3) Networking

There may be a limited or no spots for someone after their first year, but since you're technically a sophomore, you can likely pull something.

Additionally, try to pull a job with a name-brand company. Name-brand being well known Fortune 500s, large private companies, etc. You can also try and pull a job with a smaller or less-prestigious, but still large firm. Having any type of accounting or finance internship on your resume after this year will make you a force to be reckoned with come recruiting. IMPORTANT: That puts you in the position of, during the interview, being able to interview the interviewer as to why you should be at THEIR company. When that time comes, don't be a douche about it, but be confident. It's a thin line, you should learn to walk it.
