1st YR VP Family Office in the Middle East - $400K USD Comp
Folks,I’m currently working as a first year VP at a family office in the Middle East. My total comp for 2024 is $400k USD. On paper it seems decent but I’m wondering how it stacks up when considering the lack of exit opportunities here.Do you think this comp justifies the trade-offs of being in the Middle East (lack of career mobility, limited exposure to broader markets)? Or is it worth considering a move for better long-term growth even if it means taking a pay cut?Appreciate any thoughts or insights from those with experience in US/UK or Middle East markets!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your compensation as a first-year VP at $425K USD is competitive, especially when compared to VP roles in other regions. For instance, VP compensation in the US typically ranges from $300K to $500K all-in, depending on the firm and location. However, the trade-offs you're highlighting—limited exit opportunities and exposure to broader markets—are valid concerns.
In the Middle East, family offices often offer higher compensation to attract talent, but they may lack the deal flow, prestige, and networking opportunities that come with working in major financial hubs like the US or UK. This can limit your career mobility and long-term growth prospects, especially if you're aiming for roles in private equity, corporate development, or other high-finance sectors.
If your long-term goal is to maximize career growth and exposure, it might be worth considering a move, even if it means a short-term pay cut. The broader market exposure and networking opportunities in the US/UK could position you better for senior roles in the future. However, if your priority is immediate financial gain and a more relaxed lifestyle, staying in the Middle East could make sense.
Ultimately, the decision depends on your career aspirations and personal priorities. If you're leaning towards a move, targeting roles in Tier 1 cities or firms with strong deal flow and exit opportunities would be a strategic step.

How much do you work?
On average ~60 hours a week
Yeah never leave your job my dude
I think you can still exit well given that pay - must be sizeable and reputable.
Bigger question is do you want to live in Dubai? May have to step back a year coming to the U.S. but it’s still relevant and you’re making cake tax free so if you burn out you’re better off than your burnt out American counterparts.
True but I am based in Doha hence the lifestyle isn’t the best
how much can you reasonably save on 425?
At least 50%
That’s great. Helps if you’re not American. Just for context this is equivalent to making a lot motor in America factoring your cash situation. How much do you net after taxes (depending on where you’re a citizen)? This can be equivalent to 700-800k gross in London / nyc
Is the USD 425k inclusive of variable bonus? What kind of role is it - direct PE or funds & co-invests?
Been thinking of a similar move myself. Anyway, congrats on clinching a killer gig. Like others here said, I wouldn't move if I were in your shoes except for maybe making a move to Dubai or Abu Dhabi from Doha. There are a bunch of sovereign wealth funds and family offices in Abu Dhabi that can match or exceed that level of pay.
Funds and co-invests. It included base and bonus but doesn’t include carry. I was given the guidance of $5M in 5 years (all in)
