2023 - SF neighborhoods | Moving to SF from NYC

Current analyst, went to school in NYC (been here for 6 years) and moving to SFO for tech PE. Wanted to get thoughts on:

1) What are latest thoughts on best neighborhoods?
2) Is equinox still the best gym around the area?

3) Any tips for someone moving from nyc?

Marina, pacific heights, Russian hill are my favorite neighborhoods. Beautiful location by the water / parks. Lots of great restaurants. Relatively safe compared to rest of SF.

Neighborhood-wise, Marina or Cow Hollow and don't look back.

I made the same move post banking. In terms of the transition, just acknowledge up front that NYC and SF are completely different. Prepare for a much slower lifestyle in general, with more time for yourself, outdoorsy stuff, hobbies, etc. I miss the vitality of New York, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised by SF and the more relaxed pace. It’s healthier and more sustainable long term. Housing is also meaningfully cheaper (for the same amount of space) in comparably desirable neighborhoods. That said, don’t expect to have dozens of options for late-night food orders, anything you could want within a 5 minute walk, great public transit, or many of the other tangibles and intangibles that make New York great.

I moved to SF expecting to hate it but ended up loving it. I also wasn’t dating by the time I moved so YMMV.

Best neighborhoods are Pacific Heights and Cow Hollow. Relatively clean and safe. Calm family vibes but still enough to do. Marina is cool too but is built atop a landfill so if SF ever gets that big earthquake, good luck (seismic zone maps available online). Russian Hill is also nice but not as “upscale” as PacHeights and Cow Hollow. Nob Hill isn’t bad either, just try to stay north of ~Jackson street if you can to give yourself a greater buffer.
