Advent v/s BX
Hi everyone,
Looking for some advice. The title almost says it all - I interviewed with both this summer. I got an offer from Advent and accepted it since I did not get one from BX despite having interviewed with everyone at the firm so I signed with Advent and am supposed to be starting work in 2 weeks. Yesterday, got a call from BX and they extended me an offer too.
2 questions here:
Is Advent similar to BX? or are they in completely different leagues?
If no, should i think in terms of sunk cost fallacy and evaluate both the offers again irrespective of having signed with Advent?
Would really appreciate insights on future prospects, B-school placements, prestige, nature of deals, etc.
Thanks a ton!

You just got to go with your gut. What will you regret doing? Obviously not a good look to reneg on a name as good as Advent and yes Advent is a leading MF - but you have spent time with both so you know better than anyone how A) where you want to be B) how reneging will go over
Thanks, both very reasonable questions. I wish i had an answer to them but I don't. On A) I loved speaking to people from both. Can imagine working myself at either basis fit and culture. Hence, evaluating both based on brand, deal types, size, etc. and B) I guess it'll look bad especially since the entire Advent team knows the partners and principals I've worked with during my time at consulting. Therefore, would reneg only if the difference b/w the two is HUGE. But is it?
Firstly, congrats on both offers!
I am assuming this is for a 2 year stint and then off to do an MBA? If this is the case I would not take the BX offer because of the potential damage it could do relationship wise. If it were for a long term hire say after MBA or lateral hire, then I'd say evaluate the offers from scratch.
I think BX would respect you a ton by saying you have given your commitment elsewhere and don't feel comfortable reneging. Puts you in a good spot to re-recruit with either post MBA.
Just my two cents
Thank you so much. And yes, this is a pre-mba 2-yr Associate role.
But in case you're aware of how both the firms stack up, could you give me some insights? Would be super helpful. Thanks!
I am not sure how they stack up pay-wise in the US as I am based in EMEA but I have always regarded BX to be the best brand in finance - however I cannot comment how it will compare experience wise to Advent because I don't know enough about Advent. Regardless, BX people do seem to have some of the best exits I have seen - e.g. to the best single manager hedge funds if that is your thing?
Sorry if this wasn't super helpful!
Which BX team is this? BXG? Wasn't aware they hired consultants.
Nope, core private equity. Surprised you say this. The entire team here is made up of ex-consultants. Mostly from Mck.
I'm based out of Asia. Not sure if it's different this side of the pond?
Yeah Mumbai office then, pretty much the only office that does mostly consultants.
Advent is probably going to be a much better experience than blackstone. They raise a ton of aum by name only, not by performance results / quality of investments imo
Why does that translate to better experience?
This guy has no idea what he's talking about.
