Advice in Transitioning from Banker to Investor

Received an offer to join a growth equity fund investing in later stage start-ups. Any advice on how to think through valuations as an investor / how to excel at the job from the get-go? I.e. one of the things i hear talk about is a scenario fan - how do you decide on the drivers to flex and the extent of the haircut? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Congrats! There are tons of good advice out there on how to excel at your new role which i think you should check out and read.. my quick advice here is that you need to now really understand the business model of the private companies in and out and have your own thoughts (ie recommendation) with strong rationale…. Not all your investments can be homerun tho that’s what everyone is trying to achieve in this job but knowing the market and understanding the business is really crucial in making the right investment decision (really honing in what your tam is and market trend… talk to experts and mgt about it).

And lastly, while your training at banking could have taught you a to z on excel.. buyside is a bit of different animal where you need to think broadly and have intellectual curiosity on things that you might have overlooked in banking… so having an ownership really makes the difference in doing another level job. Good luck
