Advice on under-performing co-workers
My co-workers/fellow analysts have become very close friends of mine. However, they consistently produce sub-par work. I try to intervene and give them some help. My boss has asked me multiple times whether I helped them – I typically give him a non-answer, trying to change the subject. He’s told me several times that they are not meeting expectations, which, as we all know in PE, means they could get fired. I am struggling with how to handle this situation. Do I double down and cover for my friends, or do I let their work stand on its own? I know they probably aren't good enough to make it here long-term, but I continuously vouch for them resulting in me looking bad when they don’t get the job done.
Just for context, I'm several years younger than both of them and am likely to be promoted ahead of them in the next few months. I'm not sure if this changes the calculus but would welcome any thoughts for those who've faced a similar situation.
For your subordinates - it is your job to coach them up. Your team's work product is ultimately a reflection of you.
For your lateral colleagues and friends - by all means, give your friends and co-workers advice on how to better their work (if they're asking for it). Everyone should all be rowing in the same direction. But don't do the work for others at your same level. And if you do, don't try to play coy. Accept credit, and acknowledge that you stepped in with the good intentions of helping the broader team / firm.
You know what doesn't help the firm? Covering for and dragging along underperformers. Fuck that, especially when you get promoted and suddenly you're managing them. Sounds like your boss sees through it anyways.
