Am I too jolly?
Have been networking a bunch recently and the more people I email, the more I realize that it's so rare for a banker/PE guy to hit me with an exclamation mark in an email. Meanwhile anything that is somewhat positive, I always throw an excalmation mark towards the end of it.
I have realized that usually when we talk, they end up still being cheerful but when it's on emails, they seem like the most depressed people - or maybe I'm coming off as too giddy. Do you guys feel this too and is it bad to seem to jolly in your emails?
Kind of dumb but wanted to get opinions on an unserious topic lol
If this post is real, skip the exclamation marks. For better or worse, they're viewed as unprofessional and immature. You can find other ways to infuse your personality in your encounters (probably would just keep your written communications fairly vanilla and save more of it for Zoom and in-person convos).
makes sense, I think I just want to come off as cheerful and whatever but maybe you're right - keep it to the chats
Are you a woman?
It's pretty interesting in the corporate world how much exclamations are used (by everyone incl execs) vs PE and banking where you have to appear as terse and stern as possible over email.
I’ll throw a exclamation point after a thanks or thank you every once in a while.
Otherwise I generally save it for more informal emails
I use them every once in a while when saying thanks or if someone is doing me a solid. it's not that serious...
