Which PE funds are actually great investors

Was watching Orlando Bravo's interview with Harry Stebbings on 20VC - illuminating to see TB's value investing philosophy as well as operational playbook, tho not close to people in the fund nor the returns of its vintages to see how they carried through in practice

What makes a PE investor or firm great? Is any of the UMM/MF truly meaningfully differentiated? Who in the PE game have investment philosophy and processes that are repeatedly conducive to some alpha irrespective of erosion from scale? Question more around investing itself, less on structuring expertise.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what defines a great PE investor or firm and what sets them apart:

Key Traits of Great PE Investors/Firms

  1. Value-Add Beyond Capital:

    • Great PE firms have a significant value-add, whether through a differentiated research process, sourcing model, internal technology, or operational expertise. For example, a firm that can articulate what makes them special (e.g., unique operational playbooks or sector expertise) is more likely to attract top-tier LPs and generate alpha.
  2. Sourcing and Deal Flow:

    • Exceptional firms excel at sourcing proprietary deals. They don’t just rely on intermediaries but create opportunities before the market even knows about them. This proactive approach often leads to better pricing and less competition.
  3. Vision and Conviction:

    • Great investors operate with a forward-looking vision, often driven by research-based convictions about market trends. For instance, identifying repeatable phenomena or trends (e.g., Moore’s Law under duress in semiconductors) allows them to focus their efforts efficiently and stay ahead of the curve.
  4. Operational Expertise:

    • Beyond financial engineering, firms that can transform portfolio companies operationally stand out. This includes bringing in industry heavyweights, implementing strategic changes, and driving growth that wouldn’t have been possible under previous ownership.
  5. Character and Reputation:

    • In PE, reputation is everything. Firms and individuals with strong ethical standards and a history of fair dealings are more likely to build lasting relationships and attract repeat business. Off-list references and informal networks often play a significant role in deal-making.
  6. Fundraising and Terms:

    • Great firms not only raise capital quickly but also secure better terms with each fund. This reflects their ability to deliver consistent returns and maintain LP confidence.

Are UMM/MF Firms Truly Differentiated?

While many UMM/MF firms may appear similar on the surface, the best ones distinguish themselves through: - Proprietary Sourcing Models: Firms like Thoma Bravo are known for their sector-focused strategies (e.g., software) and ability to identify opportunities others miss. - Operational Playbooks: Firms with a repeatable and proven operational strategy often outperform. For example, Thoma Bravo’s focus on operational improvements in software companies is a hallmark of their success. - Sector Expertise: Specialization in specific industries allows firms to develop deeper insights and execute better deals.

Sustaining Alpha Despite Scale

Achieving alpha at scale is challenging, but firms that consistently succeed often: - Focus on niche markets or sectors where they have a competitive edge. - Develop proprietary deal flow mechanisms that reduce reliance on auctions. - Maintain discipline in pricing and avoid overpaying for assets, even in competitive markets.

In summary, great PE firms are those that combine a clear investment philosophy, operational expertise, and a strong ethical foundation to consistently deliver value. While some UMM/MF firms like Thoma Bravo have carved out a differentiated niche, the ability to sustain alpha often comes down to their ability to innovate and adapt their strategies over time.
