Ask recruiter about comp?
If you're in the market for a new job, is it inappropriate to ask recruiter about compensation before accepting an interview?

Not inappropriate. Better than wasting your time going through an interview for a job you won't accept due to low pay.
Depends on what you're looking for, but I usually say something along the lines of "I'm not really looking to move, but if I did it would be for an increase in pay, is that on the table here?". Or you can say you're not going to take a pay cut, etc.
I’m actively recruiting so the former doesn’t work, but the latter certainly makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the good idea!
It's appropriate. Don't expect an exact figure. They'll likely give a ball park range or simply say "market"
